I would not be sad to hear more about that sam/bucky version...
sam and bucky bonding over chronic pain and overcoming it to become full-time professional athletes!!
sam is boisterous and outgoing and energetic but he has insecurities and fears and soft spots like anyone else. as sweet and patient as he is, bucky is the perfect person to wait sam out until he’s ready to share those feelings. sam tries to hide it but he’s easily frustrated by the back spasms and bucky finds it a lot easier to help other people through injuries than to deal with his own.
on the other hand bucky is very quiet and prickly and everyone always tiptoes around him either out of fear or pity. sam’s not like that at all. he's not afraid to make fun of bucky, but he also likes him a lot, and he relentlessly talks him up, too. he’s genuine and honest with bucky 100% so it’s easy for bucky to open up.
they open up to each other!!!! it’s perfect!!!!
it starts because they play for NFL division rivals, which means they’re forced into the same city twice a year. they hang out around games ... and evenutally start making the drive during the offseason ... visiting each other during bye weeks....
also it’s already targeting canon that they are attached at the social media hip. best believe sam is the reason bucky gets a snapchat, twitter, instagram. (pinterest..? bucky and/or sam with a wedding pinterest board is really precious but maybe not right for this au, oh look, now i gottta write a sambucky wedding too, GREAT)
