Mac Belo rues knee injury that forced him out of Gilas
FIBA photo Rookie Mac Belo couldn’t help but be disappointed after he was ruled out of the Philippine national men’s basketball team’s upcoming campaign in the SEABA Championship due to a knee injury. It was revealed that Belo had a meniscus tear in one of his knees that requires surgery. He will be sidelined for at least four weeks. Belo, who already missed a game for his mother club Blackwater Elite, attended Gilas Pilipinas’ weekly practice on Monday to inform the team about his situation. “Syempre unang una, nadown din ako, kasi No.1 enemy ng players is injury talaga,” Belo told reporters. “Wala, ganun talaga e, kailangan ko na lang gawing motivation sa sarili ko na magpalakas talaga.” The 24-year-old forward had been expected to make the 12-man lineup in SEABA following his impressive performance for Gilas cadets last year and his stellar showing for Blackwater in the PBA. Last year, the former King Tamaraw helped the country win the SEABA Cup gold medal and also led the national team in its campaign in the FIBA Asia Challenge. But should Belo’s recovery go well, there’s still a chance for him to compete in the 2017 SEA Games, a tournament where he earlier bagged two golds, to be held in August. http://j.mp/2nDHz4L

Nagging knee injury puts Belo’s Blackwater, Gilas stints in peril
The 6-foot-4 Belo underwent (magnetic resonance imaging) on Thursday with the result more likely known before the Elite’s game against TNT Katropa on Friday.
Belo is expected to miss the game against Katropa.
Blackwater physical therapist Fro Labrador said initial reading reveals Belo could possibly be suffering from meniscal injury on his right knee, due for a large part to overuse.
“Malamang yun meniscus yung injury niya. Kanina kasi siya nag-MRI,” Labrador told FOX Sports on Thursday. “Pero kasama na dun yung pag wear and tear sa tuhod niya.”
But the Blackwater therapist said Belo’s current injury is different from the previous one he had back when he was playing for Far Eastern University.
“Actually na-injure na siya before pero sa kaliwang tuhod nung college siya. So nagka-meniscal na siya before, pero yung ngayon, yung right niya naman na tuhod,” he said.
Labrador said Dr. Randy Molo, an associate of renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Raul Canlas, will make the official reading of the MRI result.
Labrador added that Belo’s case is a bit similar to Star guard Paul Lee, a member of the original Gilas 24-man pool though the Blackwater freshman often complained of pain on his knee most of the time.
“Kasi yung kay Belo, may mga symptoms, may on and off swelling saka masakit yung knee niya. Eh sa experience ko, kailangan nililinis na talaga,” explained Labrador.
If ever Dr. Molo recommends surgery, Belo will more likely be out for as long as 2 months to recover, a situation that would also mean missing the entire Commissioner’s Cup, along with a possible stint with Gilas.
As it is, Belo will be the fourth player in the Gilas pool to suffer an injury after Mahindra’s Russel Escoto, Blackwater teammate Art Dela Cruz and Lee. – Fox Sports Asia
Mac Belo set to be sidelined with knee injury, reveals Blackwater team manager
PBA Media Bureau Mac Belo, star rookie of the Blackwater Elite and a vital cog of the Philippine national men’s basketball team, will have to spend some time on the sidelines due to a knee injury. The development was relayed to InterAksyon.com by Blackwater team manager Johnson Martines. “The truth is, Mac Belo is hurting,” Martines said in a telephone interview. “He has an MRI to check his knee because he’s been complaining about it. “Definitely ipapahinga muna siya.” Martines didn’t give a timetable on how long will Belo will sit out. Belo’s loss was a huge blow to Blackwater’s Commissioner’s Cup campaign where the Elite remain winless in three games. His frontcourt partner, Art Dela Cruz, is also out for at least three months with an Achilles tendon injury which he sustained during Gilas Pilipinas practice. In order to address their frontline issues, the Elite on Wednesday struck a deal for KG Canaleta from GlobalPort in exchange for reserves Dylan Ababou and James Forrester. “Kailangan namin ng malaki at kailangan rin namin ng scorer,” Martines said. But Belo’s injury also has a huge impact to the national team. Following his impressive performance for the Gilas cadets last year, the 24-year-old forward has been expected to suit up for the country in the upcoming SEABA Championship to be played in Manila. Gilas Pilipinas is about to start its daily practice sessions on April 10, and should Belo not recover quickly, it is highly likely that he would be left out from the final 12-man roster. http://j.mp/2nv51Cd

Arwind Santos praises fellow FEU standout Mac Belo: ‘May ibubuga talaga’
PBA Media Bureau King Tamaraw versus King Tamaraw. Arwind Santos and Mac Belo, two former FEU standouts, finally shared the floor when the San Miguel Beermen took on the Blackwater Elite on Friday. But Santos’ team got the last laugh as the Beermen walloped the Elite, 118-93. Belo, who has been instrumental in Blackwater’s improvement, was only limited to his lowest output since turning pro. He finished with only four points and struggled to get good looks to the basket against the tight-guarding Santos. The rookie could only hit the scoring column midway the third period and was hardly a factor all game long. Despite that, Belo still earned praises from Santos. “Talented si Mac, siguro hindi lang napapasahan ng bola. Sayang talent niya. Kailangan hanapin siya ng teammate niya,” Santos said. “May talent siya, may ibubuga talaga. Nag-a-average siya ng 17 points eh. Kanina lang talaga, parang hindi siya nakikita o napapasahan ng mga teammates niya. Tingin ko medyo nagkakanya-kanya yung Blackwater.” For Belo’s part, he said that he cherished playing against one of the players that he look up to. “Napatunayan natin na kailangan pa naming mag-improve as a team and as individuals. Kanina ko lang nakita yung ganitong klaseng depensa. Iba’t-ibang klaseng depensa ginawa nila sa akin. Pati si Arwind, nahirapan ako sa kanya,” Belo said. http://j.mp/2jug3bK
Santos says Belo didn’t get enough touches in SMB rout of Elite
PBA IMAGES Arwind Santos thinks Mac Belo’s woeful performance against San Miguel is just a blip in his promising rookie year. Belo was limited to just four points on 1-of-5 shooting from the field and Santos feels Blackwater was unable to get the most out of its forward on Friday. “Ok naman si Mac pero kanina, parang di siya pinapasahan ng nga kasama niya eh. Parang mabibilang mo lang kung ilang beses sya pinasahan ng mga kakampi nya,” Santos observed. “Dapat tingnan din nila yun kasi sayang yung talent ng bata. Si coach Leo (Isaac) ang makakapagdikta ng ganun, more plays pa para kay Mac Belo.” (Mac was ok but earlier, it’s like he didn’t get enough touches. You can count the times when he got the ball. That’s something they should look at because the kid is talented. Coach Leo has the say on that, more plays for Mac Belo.) With Belo silenced, the Beermen raced to a 29-point edge before cruising to a 25-point victory, their fifth straight win. Santos believes that his fellow FEU alumnus still can show more than what he did in the duel, and it’s just a matter of the San Miguel defense working to a tee against the Elite. “Pinaghandaan din namin sila kasi alam namin na may kakayahan sila na talunin kami. First and second quarter, maganda talaga ang ginawa namin defense and offense kaya nalamangan namin sila ng malayo at nahirapan sila makabalik nung huli,” the 2013 MVP said. (We prepared for them because we know they have a chance to beat us. We really played well in the first and second quarters, our offense and defense worked, that’s why we led early and they had a hard time recovering.) Santos has no doubt Belo will make it big in the PBA. “Oo naman, may ibubuga pa sya. Naga-average sya ng 17 points per game. Kanina lang, parang wala silang play, kanya-kanya sila so baka gigil din sila manalo,” he said. (Yes, he can perform more. He’s averaging 17 points per game. It’s just earlier, it seems like they didn’t have a play, they’re playing one-on-one, so they badly wanted to win.) Written by: Randolph B. Belo on facing former coach Racela: ‘I’m used to having him on my side’
PBA IMAGES Together for almost five years, Mac Belo admits it was a weird feeling seeing coach Nash Racela on the other side when Blackwater played TNT on Friday. “I’m used to having him always on my side,” the prized rookie said as his partnership with Racela dates back from their days in Far Eastern University, Phoenix in the PBA D-League, and even in the international stage as a part of the Gilas cadets. “He coached me for so long so he knows my game and my tendencies.” Belo also admitted that there were times where he would look at Racela to get instructions before stopping himself midway and realizing that they’re already on different teams. “I’m waiting for him to direct me to a play. Then, I just catch myself thinking we’re already opponents,” he said. Belo, though, fought through the distraction and went on to rack up 21 points and nine rebounds. Unfortunately for Blackwater, his production was still not enough as the Elite suffered from their first loss in the 2017 PBA Philippine Cup, falling to the KaTropa, 99-92. Despite being on opposing teams, Belo still got a nod of approval from his former mentor. “After the game, coach Nash and coach Josh (Reyes) told me I had a good game,” he said. With both parties moving on, Belo said his focus now is on his current team, as Blackwater eyes to bounce back from this defeat. “This loss should be a wakeup call for us because we know TNT is a contender,” he said. “It’s a challenge for us to improve as a team because we still know that we have lots of things we still can fix.” Written by: Randolph B.
