YEAH!! & Fusion Cuisine; Steven says he considers them all his moms and won’t lie to the Maheswarans; it’s v deliberately about how Steven’s family structure *isn’t* nuclear & thats okay and it’s happy & healthy anyway & he’s proud of his family
ahhh! I love "Fusion Cuisine" for that exactly! immediately after "Rose's Scabbard" aired, I felt 768685% certain that a friend of mine needs to start watching this series, so while I reinforced my earlier recommendations I told her that the way the crystal gems are written as a family is one of my favorite parts about it. when I first started watching I expected them to pull that hackneyed baby macho plot at least once, you know, because it's such a convention of this kind of setup: a boy raised by three female-coded characters...but they haven't done it once and I'm so happy. ON THE CONTRARY--Steven admires all three of them so much...! Steven and the crystal gems are a loving, healthy, weird, charming family, and in the episode where "convention/traditional family structures" come up, it's handled so brilliantly!? Steven is proud of his family and unwilling to exclude any one of them, and at the end of the night the Maheswarans recognize how much the gems care for him and acknowledge Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl as his parents, and approve of them. ugh--"Fusion Cuisine" was such a good episode.
