REVIEW: "I Love Surprises!", or that time Mackenzie Bell was a Disney Villain
In what was the least surprising thing ever, the admin at UnderstudyAppreciation went to see Mackenzie Bell in her first few performances as Fastrada (roughly three weeks ago). Yes, I really likes Pippin. (Disclaimer: This review is three weeks old and I apologize—life got in the way.)
What was most surprising, however, was Mackenzie’s Fastrada portrayal. The role has had excellent performers understudying the role in the past: namely Sabrina Harper, who is now dancing her butt off eight times a week on the Pippin U.S. National Tour, and Molly Tynes, who is now in the ensemble of Papermill’s Can-Can opening tonight. Mackenzie, however, brings a freshness to the role that this reviewer has not seen in quite a while. Mackenzie is most likely one of the younger, if not youngest, to understudy the role, and brings a youthful energy in that gives Fastrada an almost manic spin.
Mackenzie’s Fastrada reminded me most of Yzma from Emperor’s New Groove, oddly enough. Her speaking voice resembles Eartha Kitt and her mannerism the Disney animation of a woman comically hungry for power. Sme of her evil laughs are pretty hilarious.
Her dancing, though it does not resemble Harper’s classical training nor Tynes’ ease of movement (Molly Tynes is also an aerialist), actually most resembles Charlotte d’Amboise’s dynamic moves. Each move is executed like fireworks going off and packs a lot of energy. Despite the evilness of Yzma to give her character a bit of maturity, she has the sprightliness of Tinkerbell from Peter Pan. In fact, even when she isn’t dancing, she is often seen skipping or prancing around stage.
Lastly, her rendition of “Spread a Little Sunshine” is a delight. She as a performer is clearly happy to be playing the role, and it translates well for the portrayal of Fastrada. It seems as if Fastrada is reveling in her moment to shine, which is exactly what the characterization ought to be in that number.
In short, Mackenzie Bell is simply a delight to watch. She delivers a high-energy performance that steals the limelight easily whenever she is onstage. Should she have any more dates on as Fastrada, I highly recommend seeing her.
Mike Schwitter makes his debut as Lewis on 9/9 and Mackenzie Bell makes her u/s Fastrada debut on 9/9!
erichbergen: Always great to catch up with old friends Mackenzie Bell and Grant Gustin.
