For some understudies getting called to perform in the limelight is a lifelong dream, which can quickly turn into a nightmare when faced with a booing crowd. That was the reception which initially greeted Ria Jones, who stepped into Glenn Close’s shoes to play the role of Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. The London Coliseum was packed with eager fans, some of whom had paid £150 to see Emmy Award-winner Close reprise her role as Norma.
Ria Jones, who played the role of Norma Desmond in a 1991 workshop of Sunset Boulevard and is currently understudying the role in the revival with Glenn Close, stepped into Ms. Close’s shoes recently when it was announced that Ms. Close was “indisposed.” Despite initial reactions, Ms. Jones delivered a phenomenal performance. UK News site Independent covers the story.

Actress Ann Sanders made a bit of history this week when she stepped into the role of Anna Leonowens in the Lincoln Center Theater revival of The King and I. She is the first Asian-American performer to play the role on Broadway.
A second article from Playbill about Ann Sanders making history this past week at The King and I!
Congrats to understudy Ann Sanders, who made history yesterday in The King and I as the first Asian American to play the role of Anna on Broadway. This is a monumental step for Asian American performers in theatre and we couldn’t be more pleased for Ms. Sanders.
