I know the school doesn't have a textbook as such for Biology 1/2 (idk if they have one for 3/4 or not) but I also know a lot of students use textbooks for reference and to just learn by themselves? Can you guys tell me which textbook most people use and if u recommend going out and getting these resources?

It most definitely does not hurt to get a textbook as a reference. I most definitely recommend Heinemann textbooks for Biology as they cover most content needed for the exam. Feel free to check out the Library as well so you don’t have to buy these textbooks.

How do you do well in methods 3/4 without tuition?

Hey,

It is definitely possible to do well in Methods without tuition. There have been multiple people who have been able to do really well without a tutor. If you are having trouble grasping the concepts in Methods, your first step would be to email/contact your Maths teacher for help outside class (1-on-1). Maths Help usually runs during Tuesday lunchtimes, so if you are having difficulty, that is another alternative option.

If you’re not struggling with content as much and would just like some more practice on application questions, the first step would be to get as many as resources as possible from the Library/Maths portal. Once you’ve worked on a few questions, you might have a few questions which you can ask your teacher for help on. If you are in need of more resources, feel free to once again ask your teacher and I’m sure they’ll be more than happy to help you out.

Even if not your own teacher, there are plenty of other maths teachers who would be happy to help you out so don’t be afraid to just approach them and see how you go. Remember that even touching base with friends and those in other classes taking the same subject as you can be super helpful.

Hellloo! What are your best tips for Methods 1/2? How do you study and take notes and organise it all, just basically what exactly YOU do? Cheers :)

FAM member 1: My biggest tip is using your class time wisely! Try and get as much work done in class, remember to listen to the teacher and ask questions. Last year I had a notebook specifically for methods notes, but it didn’t last long as I always forgot to bring it to class. This year I write my notes on loose leaf which I keep in a folder that I take everywhere and it holds my notes for all my classes.

FAM member 2. A good tip i have is doing the exercises on the same day as you learn them in class, because that way you still remember everything taught in class, and it also makes sure that you don’t fall behind. I keep all my notes and work in the same notebook, but I stick those small tabs on the notes pages and difficult questions pages so they’re easy to find.

guys do you think biozone biology units 1 & 2 student workbook is good? have any of you used it before? I bought it and it looks good but i don't know how i should go about doing it because there's a lot of stuff.

I’ve never used any of my workbooks in ½ nor did I buy any however, a general rule with workbooks is to do them during or after you have learnt the content to aid your learning. After completing a topic, fill out relevant pages (if you don’t have time you could skip over content you’re familiar with). If the biozone offers their own explanations for some things, you could summarise the content into your own words before or after learning the specific topic in class in order to get a better idea of it or just highlight key words and use page markers to refer back to.

Workbook have many uses and it’s up to you to decide how to utilise them to suit your own style of studying.

Just make sure that the workbook you’re using is testing content from the right study design  - you can check this out on the VCAA website - Link: http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Documents/vce/biology/BiologySD-2016.pdf  (always better to check than not) and if you’re if not sure whether a particular topic needs to be covered/learnt, either refer to the study design (if it’s not in there, then you won’t have to study it - like you won’t be tested on it) or just ask your teacher. In short, the study design is your checklist of what needs to be learnt, so refer to that when in doubt :)

The cheapest place to print A4 pieces of paper of school would be in the LRC, on the colour photocopiers called “find me copier mrpg”. The last time I checked, they charge 11 cents per coloured page. Checking with the librarians is probably the best idea, as they have all the info and might be able to offer you some new ideas to save printing credit.

hey fam, i know that schools is gonna implement a new bag but im in year 12 and it probs wont be avail for us before we leave so im just wondering whether you know any backpacks ideal for back support/long dist travelling that's under $100 (crumpler is lovely but a bit pricey)?? thanks a lot

So yes the crumpler bags are indeed a tad expensive but if it makes you feel better, they do have a lifetime guarantee that you can redeem in any one of their many stores. But anyway, I totally get it if that’s out of your price range. It was out of mine too when I was choosing a new backpack. I think the main points to consider are aesthetics (looks, design) capacity (how many L, what do you want to fit) functionality (padded laptop section, drink bottle holder) and durability (material, thickness). Those are just some examples of criteria you could use when looking for a new bag!

The various Herschel bags are quite popular but you can get them from ebay/secondhand for less than $100 if you’re lucky! They seem to be quite durable and have large capacities that would be very useful for year 12 life. Also, they look pretty good.

Alternatively, I highly suggest you look at lesser-known brands as you can usually get a similar design to the Herschel bags for way less. I personally really recommend the Element bags; mine’s been with me through all sorts of stuff and it’s still as tough as ever.

Other popular backpacks are usually the ones from skating brands or sport brands e.g. RVCA, Vans, Adidas, Nike etc. so chuck those a look too. I highly recommend always looking at reviews before you buy (Amazon + youtube reviews always help!!) so you can see how well of an investment it’ll be and whether or not it’ll be the right bag for you.

To the fam leader who said she uses white lines notebooks. Are they actually good? What do you like about them?

So firstly, I got whitelines because they make my notes look pretty. It’s true when they say that whitelines don’t distract you whilst black or blue lines do. This means that not only do my notes look good but the contents of my notes stand out making it easier to revise. Recently, I also found out that they’re an amazing productivity tool! The notebooks have an app called ‘whitelines link’ which scans your notes and saves it on your phone. You can email them, save them to evernote or access them on your computer. I find this allows me to look over my notes wherever I am without having to carry the notebook around. It’s super convenient!

They are a little expensive although if I reccomend them if you want to carry notes around easily and like to make them look pretty.
