Longtime friends Nicholas Bairatchnyi and Jackson Mansfield carry their contemplative "emo-revivalist" label with grace and novelty unexpected from two recent high-school graduates. Their debut LP "Heck No, Nancy" (Near Mint) deftly mixes anthemic lyrics with Bairatchnyi's dynamic, hard-hitting guitars held in place by Mansfield's rock-solid drumming. Contouring the cries of "I'm stuck sticking with what I know/Always afraid of what I don't" or "High school sucks/When you're stuck on someone who's given up", The Obsessives pull you through their catalog like you jumped into the backseat and no one's sure what's happening, but it's cool - you don't have a curfew.
