Gear Guts: The Inner Workings of DIY/Experimental Gear is happening on Friday at Larkin Arts 3-4!! Speakers include Elliott Downs, Kim McMasters, and Travis Thatcher!!!
Gear, and the culture surrounding it hold a less obvious role in DIY music, but gear is just as crucial as show bookers and record labels. This panel will highlight the role of an artist’s electronic tools and how gear can limit, encourage, or otherwise influence the music we make. In addition we will discuss the intersection of gear culture and DIY ethic, how artists make great music with limited or zero gear, and how musicians can manipulate their tools to produce unheard and unique music. Entire worlds of sound are waiting to be discovered in nontraditional instruments – stompboxes, synthesizers, and circuits. We just have to bend them in the right direction.

But Shana Falana is actually just the name of one mastermind from Kingston, NY. Joined by Mike Amari on percussion, Shana layers wave over wave of guitar, calling out in an ethereal voice reminiscent of the Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser. The definition of "container" implies limits, control, and expectedness - the exact opposite of the aggressive and organic techno/noise project of Ren Schofield. Substituting analog trumpeting for conventional melody, the freakish noises of tracks like "Adhesive" and "Eject" bring to mind industrious 50-foot ants, building a civilization on the bones of humankind, or a greenhouse where androids factory farm internal combustion engines. Longtime friends Nicholas Bairatchnyi and Jackson Mansfield carry their contemplative "emo-revivalist" label with grace and novelty unexpected from two recent high-school graduates. Their debut LP "Heck No, Nancy" (Near Mint) deftly mixes anthemic lyrics with Bairatchnyi's dynamic, hard-hitting guitars held in place by Mansfield's rock-solid drumming. Contouring the cries of "I'm stuck sticking with what I know/Always afraid of what I don't" or "High school sucks/When you're stuck on someone who's given up", The Obsessives pull you through their catalog like you jumped into the backseat and no one's sure what's happening, but it's cool - you don't have a curfew.

This Chicago art-rock band first hit the scene in their hometown of Chicago during 1980. They would go on to tour all over the Chicago area and the surrounding midwest. After releasing their debut album <i>Machines That Kill People</i> in 1983 and the follow up <i>Ennui</i> in ‘86, ONO went silent for years before making their return in 2012 with the album <i>Albino.</i> With a mixture of industrial, noise, funk, gospel, electronic, & punk influences, it’s easy to be put in a trance while listening to ONO. With their shockingly theatrical live performances and mixture of genres, ONO has managed to be revived after almost 25 years after their last release.
