Macroglossia Questions
Hey guys, I've noticed little to no representation of people with Macroglossia. In order to remedy that I'm accepting questions about Macroglossia! To answer the first question everyone might have is: "What is macroglossia?" The answer is: Macroglossia is a two part word- Marco "large", and Glossia refers to the tongue. Macroglossia is a constant enlargement of the tongue that can cause breathing and swallowing problems, in some people its strictly cosmetic, in others it's so serious they need sugary to correct it. It can just occur at birth, or it can be a sign of a much more serious condition. Macroglossia is fairly rare, occurring in less than 200,000 people (in the US, with outside statistics being unavailable or hard to find). Speech therapy is commonly given to children with Macroglossia to aid in their speech. In my case I sit in the middle of "cosmetic" and "serious". A doctor did try to convince my parents to get me surgery, another told my parents that it was unnecessary. My parents opted to not get me the surgery, because it's invasive and hard to heal from- BUT I am a supporter of it in the severe cases. Not every Macroglossia case needs surgery, but some do. ~~ That's all I can think of to say, so if you have any questions, ask away!!
