Wei WuXian is tasked by Madam Yu to deal with a recent infestation of mice in the kitchen. Meanwhile, Lan WangJi happens to pass by Lotus Pier.

Following the novel canon, after he gets expelled from his studies in the Cloud Recesses, WWX is back in Lotus Pier where Madam Yu keeps reminding WWX he’s only a son of a servant. Getting tasked with getting rid of a mouse infestation, on one such errand WWX meets Lan Wangji passing through Yunmeng.
The POVs keep shifting between Wangxian and LWJ gets to witness a rare sight of WWX’s insecurities Madam Yu never forgets to contribute to. They spend a day in Lotus Pier together, where LWJ helps WWX with his task.
Something in Lan WangJi had solidified, then. A realization. Something important to keep.
It was an ordinary day, but also a special one. Lan WangJi remembered it, all of it, and would often come back to the memory as years passed and time spent with Wei WuXian became fewer and farther between. A summer day spent in Yunmeng catching mice — a startling truth that sounded like the setup of a joke would become astoundingly precious years later: when Lan WangJi was alone, and the name Wei WuXian was a curse instead of a blessing, and the boy who smiled at him and softly greeted him good morning was a trace of ash carried off by the wind somewhere.
This makes for a bittersweet and beautiful read and if you want to read a story that deals with WWX and his inferiority complex and LWJ visiting Lotus Pier--this fic is for you.
