“Who Pays for Free College?  Crowding Out on Campus”

I would like to see entrance to University based solely on merit, no matter how much or little money you have. Of course this also needs to be practiced through grade school, so even the students from the poorest families are prepared properly. You also need programs for "late bloomers".

I’d point that is in fact what is going on in the Chile case. From my understanding on the paper, Chile is more stringent in using GPA + standardized test for acceptance than US. But as the paper notes, when everyone is guaranteed free college, the likely result is that this ends up crowding out low-income students simply as a result of more middle to upper income students are now competing for spots they might not have competed when they weren’t eligible for more financial aid.

So if you favor a universal free college program you have to pair it up with investment in colleges to expand the programs to deal with the new levels of competition. Otherwise, you’ll have to means-test it if you want to ensure that low-income students aren’t getting crowded out and thereby increasing educational/income inequality.

Day By Day: Feast Your Eyes On Our New Event Schedule!

Joy to the world Campuseros, it’s finally here!  The Campus Party event schedule is online and ready to be devoured by your shiny, computer-screen-reflected, and wide-open eyes (happy times!).  Covering the 3rd to 6th September, hour by hour and theme by theme, it contains over 500 hours of content with over 220 speakers, and we are absolutely fanatic, ecstatic, bombastic (and any other –ic you can think of) over this new in-detail schedule!

So before we delve into all the gadgetry goodness to be found there, we’d like to highlight to you the highlights and themes of each day.  A simpler and more generalised overview of CP, we believe those with no time on their hands or who just want to get a quick feel of CP and see where the event takes them would find it very useful indeed.  Haven’t seen it yet?  You’re missing all the fun!  Click here and get your dose of pre-CP excitement (it’s less than a month away guys!) 

We’d like to say once more with feeling (repeating parrot syndrome is apparently a criterion for CP HQ residents) who will be at this head-turning event; our amazing keynote speakers Jon “maddog” Hall, Nolan Bushnell, David Rowan and Alex ‘Sandy’ Pentland, our remarkable thematic speakers, universities and tech communities from all around Europe, and the stars of our show, you, Campuseros, hailing from all techie walks of life.  Without you there is no-one to enjoy Campus Party, so before we start to get emotional guys, here are the themes for each day: 3rd Sept – Digital Economy, 4th Sept – Entrepreneurship, 5th Sept – Women in Tech, and 6th Sept – Entertainment.  Oh and in case you’re wondering, the Opening Ceremony will be on the 2nd and the Closing Ceremony on the 6th, so the 7th will be reserved for campers to dreamily pack up and return home after a mind-blowing and exhausting week of digital madness.  So my question to you is, are you ready?

Before we forget, Campus Party now has an official trailer (ooh la la, look out Hollywood), and it’s here for your viewing pleasure, so get that popcorn and fizzy drink out and watch it with your flatmates, family, and whoever else is within a 5 metre radius of you!

For Your Viewing Pleasure!

Tech-dudes and tech-gals, as many of you know, yesterday was a really rather fantastic day at CP HQ, as we conducted a Twinterview with Jon “maddog” Hall. You guys were amazing at inundating us with loads of great questions and we can’t thank you enough for getting in touch and getting involved; it’s just not an interview unless you have questions to ask – that’s happened to us before and the sheer volume of small-talk scarred us for life.
