My notes app: has the rough outlines of what one day would have been 8tracks playlists for Carlos/Kevin, Kevin/Cecil, and the three of them together. And also also like 10 saved tracklistings from when 8tracks went down and I thought it important to save them.

Kevin and Maddy’s relationship with each other is better than their doubles. They harbour a little less resentment towards each other, and Jocelin had been enough to bridge the final gap between them more often than not.
They hadn’t been close as children. Their age gap was wide enough that they simply didn’t have anything in common. She’d still sit and listen to his babbling stores though, and let him help her in the garden. They loved each other, but they weren’t close really.
When she’s in her teens, they’re a bit closer by simple fact that she’s doing more around the house. She’s the one making sure that Kevin never sees too much of their mothers delusions, and she’s the one that encourages his cassette recordings to prepare for radio.
When she’s 19, things change. Their mother vanishes, and her brother is too young to be left alone. So she drops out of her botany degree, and takes a job to pay the bills, and buy them food. Their relationship isn’t bad per se, but there’s just enough resentment in it that it’s not always easy. Usually, she can direct it where it needs to go: towards their mother and the fact that she left. He gets his internship, and she smiles at him because it’s what he’s been wanting for a decade. They make their patterns, and life readjusts.
She has Jocelin, and it bridges the last bit of separation between them. Kevin adores them: when she needs some time to sleep, he’s more than willing to take them for a few hours, and eventually the people at the radio station stop looking oddly at him for it. Jocelin rarely cries, and he can put curtsins on the window so they doesn’t get exposed to the sun.
It’s not always easy with Jocelin’s allergy. But they make do. Kevin becomes the Voice, and she considers going back to school, but then Jocelin cries, or she has to spend a day rubbing anti-irritant creams into their skin because they got exposed to too much sun.
StrexCorp comes, and it’s enough for her to worry about Kevin. He’s an important figure in their town, and she knows he’ll never accept them buying out the station. He complains about them when she’s making dinner and he’s holding Jocelin- they like their uncle’s tattoos, and can happily spend ages following the twisting yellow tentacles with their eyes, and tracing the path with their hands, laughing everytime it crosses with another one.
They buy out where she’s working, and she doesn’t make trouble. There’s already enough of that. So she puts on a smile, and increases her productivity when she’s at work, coming in half an hour early, and leaving half an hour late. It’s enough for the Strex managers to be happy, but not so much that it disrupts life too much.
They take the station, and Maddy will never forget how scared her baby brother sounded when he took them to the weather, or the way that everything seemed to stop when the woman-Lauren Mallard, came back on instead.
Days later, she will open her door, and Kevin, a jumbled mess of blood and bruises will be there in the setting sun. His third eye sewn shut, and his eyes gone black. (She cries that night for what her town has become, and what they’ve done to Kevin. (And finally, she will think the prophecy all those years ago a tragedy, and understand her mother’s desperate madness).
They’re not as close after that. Strex values efficiency above all else, and they demand that their radio host exemplifies that. So she sees him less, and when she does, he’s that little bit more loyal, that little bit less like the person she knew.
The sun stops setting after that, replaced by some terrible light in the sky that they call the Smiling God. It still burns Jocelin, and it becomes a question of how to get her child to school each day. Until one day, they take them away to be “fixed”. She’s terrified that they’ll fix Jocelin like that fixed Kevin or the rest of the town. But three days later, her child is brought back home, and she’s told that now they can truly live in the glory of the Smiling God. They take down the curtains she’s put up, and hold Jocelin up to the sky. The allergy is gone, and part of her is grateful. They lived in a desert, and now the sun never sets. Part of her hated that they just saw Jocelin as an inefficient problem that had to be fixed.
The next time Kevin is left at her door, his mouth had been carved into a smile, and she hates it. She hates the fact that this has become her life, and her brother’s. She cleans away the blood, and disinfects the wound, and she holds him in her arms until he falls asleep.
He still looks so young, and she knows logically, that he isn’t the same person she took care of when their mother vanished, or gave stuffed animals to. He’s older, and corrupted, and so conditioned by Strex that he’s happy about all of it.
It wasn’t that their mother had been bad, at least, not at first. She was like all the other parents really, but when Kevin was born, and the prophecy came, Madeline suspects something went wrong, some terrible tragedy struck their family
She has no proof that their mother was a Seer. But years after she leaves, Maddy will think of the way she screamed at the sky for something to save Kevin, and the way she hated mirrors, and she will think about her own life in the present, and wonder if her mother just saw the inevitable.
Part of Maddy resents their mother- she left leaving her to care for her brother, and even before that, she had not been a good mother. Things has started to fall apart years before that after all. She loves bed her mother, and she knows Kevin did too, but she did her best to keep them apart. He was young, and already had such high expectations.
It’s hard to be the older sibling sometimes. To watch their mothers decline, and then to have to try and support Kevin after she vanished. She had been 19, and in university. She had a future planned out and a life she wanted to live, and in the end, all of it had fallen apart.
Usually, she’s good at not letting her resentment spill onto Kevin— it’s not his fault that their mother left, or that he was going to be the Voice, or even that their mother may have Seen more than what met the eye.

• BIOGRAPHY •
Maddy’s earliest years were spent like any others, simple, straightforward. When her brother was born, she loved him, but the age difference was wide enough that they weren’t incredibly close. Of course, when she was 11, the prophecy came that her baby brother was going to be the Voice of Desert Bluffs, and part of her was surprised, because it had been ages since there was a new Voice, but mostly she thought of Kevin, and the babbled stories he told himself, and the people that would listen and wasn’t.
At the time, she won’t think that it’s a terrible tragedy for him. That will come later.
It’s during her teen years that their mother starts to fall apart; looking at the sky with a look of terror, and mumbling about the terrible things to come. For a few years, they lived in this strange, tenuous situation. She and Kevin would go to school, and when they’d get home, their mother will have covered all the mirrors in the house, or re-arranged all the furniture.
She graduated high school, and starts a botany degree. She had always liked flowers and plants; her room had been covered in plants, and in the front garden, she’d kept a collection of herbs and flowers.
Maddy was never certain what happened to their mother, but when she was 19, and Kevin was 13, their mother vanished. She’d gotten back from her classes at the university half and hour before Kevin got back from his own day at the middle school, and their mother was quite simply... gone. No letter, no notice, just some of her clothes missing from the closet, and all the mirrors in the house shattered in the backyard.
So she drops out of university- Kevin, prophesied Voice of Desert Bluffs or not, he was 13 and their mother had vanished with barely a trace. She gets a job at the grocery store to pay the bills, and she supports her brother when he comes home at 15 excitedly exclaiming he got an internship at the radio studio.
She supports her brother, and pretends that she doesn’t resent their mother for leaving, and she tries to not let the resentment spill over onto Kevin. It’s not his fault.
When he starts his own degree, she meets someone, and they hit it off. He’s romantic, and sweet; he buys her flowers, and brings her out for picnics on days when it’s just windy enough to be pleasant. Of course, when she tells him she’s pregnant, he runs, and she doesn’t see him again. Jocelin is born, and it’s a wonderful thing. She loves her child more than she could possibly imagine... of course, it takes a few days for her to realize that her beautiful, wonderful child is allergic to the sun.
It’s hard at first, but she adapts. She gets the special blinds for Jocelin’s room, and she informs the City Council and the Secret Police of the unexpected development.
And things are good, really.
When StrexCorp comes, she doesn’t resist; she puts on a smile, and does her work, and hopes, desperately, that her brother will be okay. When they take the station, they drop him on her doorstep in a crumbled heap of blood and bruises. A month later, they take Jocelin to “fix” them, and when they’re returned, the allergy is gone and she’s not sure if she’s grateful for it; the Desert had so much sun after all, even more since Strex had come. (They say it’s so Jocelin can bask in the light of the Smiling God).
Now, she works as a receptionist at the elementary school; she keeps her head down, and hugs her brother close whenever he comes to her from another bought of re-education.

Hellaina: She’s my scary snake lady! She’s Vox’s PA (though in truth more akin to a COO). Technically he owns her soul, but she thinks she got the much better deal out of it. She died in the early 1980s of a heart attack induced, in large part, but the whole… 1980s work culture. She is, all things considered, quite happy down in Hell! (She also despises Valentino).
Dia: Hellaina’s wife, and regular in cannibal town. She runs a butcher shop, because her actual skills in pathology aren’t… super useful here. In life she sold organs on the black market, and is a special sort beloved freak. Definitely some vibes of pastel whimsi-goth in that girl.
Jayden: Velvette’s PA. He was created to fulfill a joke originally. Vox has a snake PA, and one of my writing partners hc that Val also had a snake PA, co clearly Vel needed one too. He’s very young, like, died in the last five years and was an influencer in life (and still is in hell) sort of young.
Adelard: OLD. He was in the seminary until he had a bit of a crisis of faith, left to become a healer during the early 1300s, and then a plague doctor when that all broke out. He killed a lot of his patients because it was kinder for that than to die slowly of the plague. In Hell he’s the closest thing to a librarian, and definitely a bit of an eccentric! He collects a lot of the newly fallen.
Belphegor: lord of Sloth, narcoleptic, and an idealist. Probably going to quit at some point to create purgatory, or just… somewhere for the vast majority of the dead to go who weren’t great people but don’t deserve Hell either.
Astaroth: Bel’s best friend, another fallen Angel. Tara spends most of her time on Earth, acting as the classic deal demon. She has a fwb deal with Mephistopheles (yes the one from Faust), and also as Bel’s inter-ring liaison a lot of the time.
Metatron: the Voice of God! (And heretical on my part). He was the first thing ever created, before the universe itself was, and he, God, and Asherah were the primordial polycule… at least until she went to sleep. God did too, some 1400 years ago, so Metatron has been keeping Heaven and Earth from realizing God is MIA by acting in his stead.
As for the wtnv OCs!!!
The new one is Nezha. They’re a glassblower from DB, they’re tiers of punk, they created and then destroyed the stained glass of the Smiling God in DB’s Joyous Congregation. (I have more hc about that, but shhh, the fic will be released in a few days). Their Double was Theseus’s best friend until her death— weird magical inter-city coven they were all a part of.
Speaking of Theseus! He’s the NV weatherman. He’s quite chill, all things considered. He was part of the magical intercity coven (where he met Ted the Weatherman (mentioned! And therefore canon!) from DB. He’s known about the weird effect of the towns for aaaages, but as no one ever asks the weatherman anything, he’s never volunteered any information. After the coven fell apart, he went to uni for meteorology. In an as yet unfinished fic, he becomes Maddy’s (Kevin’s sister) best friend.
Mikhail and Matvei: a set of doubles who hate one anotber. They both went to school outside the Desert. But whereas Mikhail is a relatively good person, he studies time, Matvei is EVIL. Matvei was a StrexCorp enforcer, Matvei is now working on the Sandstorm project. Matvei carved out one of his own eyes in a show of devotion to the Smiling God, and is a hardcore loyalist even without drugs.
Speaking of! Helios is the Smiling God! …sort of. Helios created DB and then just sort of… forgot about it. He came back to find Strex and is now masquerading a priest to figure out how to fix it. He’s also the Greek pantheon Helios, same dude. In the same unfinished fic, he’s Jocelin’s (Kevin’s nibling) biological father.
Maddy and Jocelin! Kevin’s sister and no king respectively. They would be Abby and Janice’s doubles. Maddy wanted to be a botanist, as after their mother took off, ended up raising Kevin. They’re still quite close in large part because of Jo, and because there is no double of Steve. Jocelin, as a child, has a sun allergy Strex ‘fixed’. They’re like… 13 right now, but getting into acting! After Strex was defeated, they were some of the first to move to NV.
