❝   YES,  MOTHER.     yes,  i’ll  call  the  jet  as  soon  as  we’re  ready.  of  course  hanna  will  be  coming,  too.  don’t  use  that  tone  with  me,  mother,  she’s  my  wife.  okay.  okay.  i’ll  let  you  know  when  we  land.   ❞     he  hangs  up  the  phone,  sighing  with  relief  that  the  half  -  hour  long  phone  call  from  hell  with  his  mother  is  finally  over.  he  perches  on  the  edge  of  the  bed,  running  a  hand  through  his  hair.  he  looks  up  at  hanna  with  wide,  helpless  hellfire  eyes,  shaking  his  head.     ❝   my  father  and  cal  were  in  a  boating  accident.  they  didn’t  make  it.   ❞     he  wasn’t  close  to  either  of  them;  he  mostly  felt  abandoned  by  his  father,  and  looked  down  upon  by  his  brother,  but  he’s  still  human,  and  a  single  tear  slips  down  his  cheek.  if  not  because  of  the  loss  of  family,  then   ---     

❝   my  mother’s  been  named  queen  regent  until  i  land,  and  then. . .   they’re  crowning  me.  we  have  to. . .   ❞     he  feels  sick.  maven  presses  his  eyes  close,  pinching  the  bridge  of  his  nose  in  an  attempt  to  ease  the  headache  that’s  beginning  to  form  as  his  mind  races.  there’s  so  many  things  to  do,  but  all  he  can  focus  on  is  the  cold  dread  in  the  pit  of  his  stomach.     ❝   king.   ❞     he  mutters  under  his  breath,  barely  audible.  but  then  he  remembers. . .     ❝   fuck,  i  forgot  about  aria’s  birthday.   ❞     the  reason  they’re  in  rosewood.     ❝   i  have  to  go  now,  but  you  can  fly  out  after.   ❞

          tracking is what keeps him sane. perhaps there is an irony in that. it’s the contact with other people, with their consciousness that leaves him losing more and more of himself. but without his work he thinks it would be worse.  he knows it would. having something to focus on helps and when he is doing something good, then it makes it worth it. it’s better than spending his entire life hidden away in a shitty apartment trying to lock out the world from invading his brain anymore than it already has. 

jobs like this especially remind him why he even does this shit. it’s that look of relief on the victims’ faces when he gets there in time. that look in the eyes of the girl now when he catches her gaze. she was easy enough to find. even easier to take out the assholes who took her. it’s always easier when he is saving someone rather than avenging them. one less innocent death to carry in his mind. “  i’m here to help,  ”  he murmurs gently as he kneels beside her  “  your father sent me.  ”

the past hour has been a blur of confusion.    too many people trying to explain to him what had happened,   doctors trying to check him out,   nick fury standing silently off to the side all the while.    so when the door flies open and hanna enters,   tony should be relieved to see a friendly face.    not necessarily the case.    rather,   he’s stunned silent.    of course it should have registered that she’d be back.    there’s no memory of having seen her during the fight,   but she’d have been un-dusted with the others.    god,   she’d been one of the primary reasons he’d agreed to help steve.    so it’s entirely illogical for him to be so shocked,   but   -- 

he shouldn’t be gaping at her.    tony makes an effort to relax,   tilts his head back against the pillow and smiles.      “   ‘ bout damn time i get a friendly face in here,   ”      he murmurs,   words grating painfully against his throat.
