Took a vacation and read a bunch of non-fiction books but I’m back
This is a bit of a different review for me because Stay and Fight by Madeline ffitch was a book that I’d spent a long time looking forwards to reading, but ended up being an extremely tough book for me to read for very personal reasons. I wrote this to sort out why it emotionally hit me so hard.
I’m trying to think of a fun ironic way to end this post to no avail. This whole review is crushingly genuine. Ew. Cringe. I hate it.
Now, as an adult, intellectually I do understand that all my parents wanted to do was for me to grow up healthy and with minimal cavities. I get that it is actually kind of hilarious that the nickname my bullies chose was ‘cow cheese’. Is not most cheese a cow derived product? But emotionally it still hurts. Emotionally, I desperately wish I’d been fed mac n cheese and that by the principle of ‘you are what you eat’ I would subsequently become normal.

'We care a lot about hygiene around here,' she said. 'I know you people are really big on this stuff. Am I right?' The intake worker remained silent, frowning slightly. 'Right?' asked Helen again. She pushed forward, toppling window frames. She raised the hand sanitizer above her head. 'Right? Just admit it. Please could you admit that you people love hand sanitizer? Just give me that.' 'Please,' the girl said. 'Please calm down. I am going to leave now, and we can have this conversation later when I feel safer.' 'Safer? What in the hell does that mean?' asked Helen, brandishing the bottle. 'You are behaving erratically,' said the intake worker. 'So I'm going to come back at a better time.' She turned to me. I stood swaying, my fingers numb from grasping my boy. 'I will make my report, and you can expect that we will be in touch again soon.' Then she knelt down again before Perley, her prize. 'Perley, honey, don't worry,' she said. 'Remember that you can tell your teacher anything that happens, okay? We are here to help you. Sometimes mommies and daddies - even when they love you very much- they need help. Or they need a break. And it's not about you, and it's not your fault.' 'We don't have a daddy,' Perley said. When she left, the house fell down around us and we burst into flames.

Book 6/12 - Stay and Fight, Madeline Ffitch
It was a solid read! Idk how I can like and hate the 3 main women of the story, but I do. Baby boy Perley is the best though 🥺
The journey the 3 women plus Perley go through was interesting. I liked how the book was unafraid to highlight the mistakes each character makes, and their flaws but also their humanity despite their flaws
my favorite exchange that happens in my marriage is when one of us is reading a book recommended by the other, and we put it down mid-chapter and say, "YOU MONSTER, WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO ME"
