Madelyn Spaulding in “She-Back!” (Season 4, top) and “Attack of the Living Brain Puppets” (Season 2, bottom) of “Static Shock”
Madelyn Spaulding is the antagonist of "Attack of the Living Brain Puppets". It isn't 100% clear (to me at least) if she was originally downtrodden and her telepathic/mind-control powers altered her neurology in other ways or if this is an example of someone having the tendency to misuse power as soon as they obtain it. In her case, she decides to use her powers to win the election for freshman class president.
Speaking of relatively mundane utility, Virgil uses his powers in an attempt to get the vending machine working only for multiple items to come out and make a mess on him. This leads Richie to become the third candidate (note that he later on does make a jibe about intelligence not being required for politics, which remains sadly relevant).
A flashback scene shows that both Madelyn and Ragtag from "Power Play" got their powers from being in the vicinity of the Big Bang. It is worrisome how many people were affected even without being at the exact location the Quantum Vapor was used; no wonder Robert attended that town hall meeting about it back in season one.
I'll get more into it in next week's post, but I do wonder if this episode was originally meant to be earlier on in the show's run and got pushed back, or if it's another example of kids' cartoons of the time having a relatively loose continuity. Virgil started out as a high schooler in "Shock to the System", "Frozen Out" is said to be over a year after the Big Bang, yet now the freshman class president elections are being held? Did I miss something or am I overthinking things?

Madelyn Spaulding
Smart and ambitious, high school student Madelyn Spaulding was well known for being quite haughty and arrogant, as well as a busybody who was very controlling over her friends and classmates. On the night of the Big Bang, Madelyn was out on the docks conducting interviews as part of an extra credit essay on the homeless problem in Dakota. She was exposed to the Quantum Vapor, bestowing her metahuman powers.
Although she did not realize it at first, Madelyn gained the ability to read and control people's minds. Corrupted by these powers, Madelyn began to mind-control all those around her, making them into her ‘brain puppets.’ The particular nature of Static’s electrical powers rendered him immune to Madelyn’s mind control. Seeing him as the only one who could stop her, Madelyn led a small army of her brain puppets in an effort to destroy Static.
Following a tremendous battle, Madelyn was knocked unconscious by one of Static’s energy bolts. After recuperating, Madelyn discovered that being shocked in this fashion had augmented her powers and provided her with the additional ability of telekinesis. Creating a costume for herself, she set out to become a super villain and fell in with Ebon’s team of villains, The Meta-Breed. It was not long before Madelyn had usurped Ebon as the leader of the team and put together a plan to take down Static.
Aided by his ally, Gear, Static was able to defeat Madelyn and her team. The young woman was once more incapacitated by Static’s electrical bolts and she was taken into custody.
Actress Kimberly Brooks provided the voice for Madelyn with the young villainess first appearing in the ninth episode of the second season of Static Shock, ‘Attack of the Living Brain Puppets.’
Happy Holidays! Here's a reel from last year to start the holiday season!
( Audio is from DC Robot Chicken Special )
Last year, I drew a little reel of the Static Shock characters celebrating a Christmas party hosted by Madelyn. Inspired by the Justice League episode "Comfort and Joy" the meta-breed finally captured Static and Gear, unknown to them Madelyn and some of the others call off any hostility towards the holidays...except for Ebon of course.
Though there is usually conflict, the meta-breed holds the Christmas party, especially to help the less fortunate meta-humans like Permafrost and Ragtag. Madelyn, with her sewing skills, made a blanket for Ragtag and a special sweater for Ebon, which made Ragtag tear with joy, and Ebon mutter under his breath. Madelyn wanted to make this a very special Christmas for her friend Permafrost. So she saved her money from her comic store job and was able to find a replacement angel ornament that was once shattered after her mother's passing. Seeing her smile was the best gift Madelyn had gotten this year.
The other meta-humans got presents for each other under one rule from Madelyn, that they were not stolen. They even gave Static and Gear presents even though they had their hands tied. Really, the only plan Madelyn had for Static was to help light the Christmas tree. Gear chuckled with glee as he got his gift as Static wondered to himself self what the heck was going on. Even so, the hero appreciated a day of peace. It made him realize the Meta-humans he fought with were actually good people just down on their luck or fate, which dealt a bad hand. Well... except for Ebon, who gave him a cold stare the whole night.
Static Shock characters as things I have messaged my friends:
Awhile back, I saw this idea used in the Batfam or Teen Titans fandom (cannot remember which), and I always wanted to do one for the Static Shock characters! So I finally set aside some time and made it. (It took awhile to find messages that fit the characters, XD)
...I feel like this shows how chaotic my chats are with my friends.
Yes, I actually did get set on fire in my chemistry class back in 2009, XD. But just my arms; it was for an experiment/demonstration that did not burn at all (Long story short, I coated my arms in water, and the teacher put these soapy bubbles filled with something flammable on my arms. Then lit it on fire. The bubbles burnt up and evaporated the water, but my skin was totally fine). Still one of the coolest moments, though; I wish someone took a picture. (It was probably the closest thing to having superpowers, XD)
The Madelyn one is a My Immortal joke. I could have used it for Ebon (since shadows/darkness is like...his thing), oops.

Got a Madelyn Spaulding custom figure for the Static fans to see! Hope we get Static Shock animated series figures one day.
Just some quick pencil sketches of some Static Shock villains in my style.
I like how Francis, Shiv, and Talon turned out the most.
When I was looking at references, I realized that Ebon, Shiv, and Talon all have matching earrings, XD. (And I immediately thought of them all going to Claire’s to grab the same style -kidding-)
