The wonderful flowers of Garrya elliptica 'James Roof' (silk tassel) are blooming. This cultivar is a male plant that makes these long, grey-green catkins up to 20cm in length. This is a vigorous bushy evergreen shrub with dark green leaves.

At Madingley Hall, Cambridge, UK, the Corylus avellana (hazel, cobnut, common filbert) are being pruned to remove older stems. The plants are trained to make a spectacular covered walk. At this time of year the large, spreading deciduous shrubs are sheltering Galanthus nivalis (snowdrops) and Eranthis hyemalis (winter aconite).

In this sheltered courtyard at Madingley Hall, Cambridge, UK, the winter flowering Clematis cirrhosa var. balearica (fern-leaved clematis, evergreen clematis, Minorca clematis, winter-flowering clematis) is providing a show. This evergreen climber has small, very finely cut, dark green leaves and slightly fragrant, creamy-yellow flowers spotted purple within. Flowers are followed by fluffy seedheads.
