Weighing in at an estimated 12 million pounds(!!) #MadisonBoulder is thought to be the largest #glacialerratic in North America and among the largest in the whole world. At 23 feet high and 85 feet across at its longest it’s believed there are an additional 10-12 feet buried. . . It was #Harvard Proffesor #LouisAggasiz who first proposed that the Earth had been through several "Ice Ages", with mile thick ice sheets covering New England some 10,000 years ago. These glaciers carved out much of our landscape including #CapeCod which was pushed up to form a terminal #morraine marking the furthest extent of the last ice sheet. . . During the #icesge glaciers would pick up large boulders and debris as they made there way over mountain ranges and carved smooth #drumlins or deposited snakelike #eskers in the landscape. As the ice sheets melted these large boulders would be deposited many miles from their origin. They will often have a distinct geology from the area where they ended up- earning the name "erratic". Evidence of this geologic action can be found through the regoin- from the boulder fields of #Dogtown, to other glacial erratic like #DoaneRock on Cape Cod. If you visit #MountAuburnCemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts you'll find the final resting place of Proffesor Agassiz and you might note the stone that marks the spot is actually a small glacial erratic boulder from the #AarGlaciers in his native Switzerland. . . . #famousrocksofnewhampshire #geology #geologic #geological #MadisonNH #NewHampshire #history #instascience #geologyrocks #igersnewengland #geologyrocks #geologyporn #geologynerd (at Madison, New Hampshire)
