New Music Thursday! @madmcferrin - Insane I rarely get excited about new music from artists that I don't know. The #PsychoFellas recently did a show about the science of nostalgia and music. And I fit solidly into the postulate, "I like what I like". But now and again I get introduced to something new that reverberates my soul. The funny thing about this music is, it's not "really" new. In the music annals of my memory files Bobby McFerrin is an important artist. Don't Worry Be Happy was a #1 jam but damn if I say it you can slap me right here. McFerrin's contribution was really a time, outside of Miles Davis, where I heard how fluid music really is. Over the years, I've come to understand that it was his fearlessness that I admired as much as I loved his music. Then I heard Madison, the youngest of the McFerrin brood. Yes, this music is familiar...but it's not too. She takes the best of what her father created and created her own thing. An ambient soul thing using her voice as all the instruments. This song is in short: #INSANE in description and title. I have to admit that I haven't listened to a track by Bobby in a while. Typically when I hear something new that reminds of something old I use to enjoy, I always go back and listen to the old reference. I usually enjoy the old more than the new and find myself more engaged with the former. It didn't happen this time. I found myself repeating streams of her music. I am not by any means attempting to compare the music of the McFerrin's, but I will say I can imagine the pride emanating from Bobby. I find a strange joy in seeing kids follow the trails their parents blazed whether intentional or not.
