SO PERFECT

You knew it before it happened — a member of a boy band, especially someone wearing the kind of clothes Reggie — your parents would never approve him as part of the family.

And that was exactly what happened. It really broke your heart.

The argument had started the moment they saw you at the driveway, kissing Reggie goodbye after a date — your mom had been watching through the window with a scowl. This was the boy my child has been seeing? she must have thought.

You had watched Reggie walk away from your house, before you had opened the door to see both of your parents standing there, seemingly furious. And for a moment you wondered whether you had said a wrong time when you’d be back.

“Who was that,” your dad growled.

You frowned at his tone. “Did I say wrong time when I would be back? I told you I was going on a date, the movie ended an hour ago and we grabbed hotdogs on the way back. I already told you about Reggie.”

“Parents who give their child a sophisticated name like Reginald, I expected him to be someone who we can accept,” you mom said, coming to stand beside your dad.

You raised your eyebrows. “Meaning?”

Your dad crossed his arms. “He looks like someone who won’t respect God, won’t wait for marriage. And as long as you live in this house, you will not date anyone who disrespects the Lord.”

You scoffed. “We are not going to—”

He interrupted you. “He will manipulate you to do it. Boys like that live to do sin and are doomed to be sent to Hell.”

Your dad took in a deep breath. “You will not see him anymore.”

Your heart jumped in fear, before you shook your head. “I’m not a kid anymore, you can’t force us apart!”

He scowled. “As long as you live under this roof, you will obey our rules.”

You swallowed, feeling like you were about to choke in tears — so you turned, speedwalked to your room and slammed it shut. You leaned against the door for a moment, breathing heavily, before you got onto the bed, hugging one of your stuffed animals as tears started to fall.

You didn’t know how long you had been sobbing when it happened, but at one point you heard soft taps from the window. You looked up, and saw a familiar silhouette at your window, a hand pressed against the glass. You frowned, before you carefully sat up and went to the window and opened it as quietly as you could before you glanced around, as if afraid your parents were about to teleport at the backyard and notice Reggie. “Are you crazy? If my parents—”

“I heard you fighting,” he muttered, interrupting you. “I couldn’t leave home after I heard that.”

You grabbed his sleeve, pulling him inside and sliding the window shut before turning to him. “You can’t just… they don’t want me to see you anymore.”

“I figured,” he just replied, shrugging. “But we’ll turn eighteen soon.”

You sniffled. “So?”

“Sooo,” Reggie drew the word out, hands in his pockets. “We can’t see each other for a while. But when we’re both eighteen, we can just… run away. No one has a say to what we can do at that point anymore.”

You blinked, your mouth dropping open. “Are you serious?”

He smiled slightly. “I would do anything for you, honestly.”

You looked around your room. “Where would we go?”

He shrugged. “Anywhere we want.”

You stared at him, he was actually serious. And then, a grin spread onto your lips and you grabbed him, pulling him into a hug. “Yes.”

“Yeah?”

You nodded, pulling away and instead held his face in between your hands. “I want that, I want to have an adventure with you.”

He smiled, leaning in to meet your lips with his, and you knew that life would become so much better soon.
