Thoughts on Julie (1956)
I had been interested in seeing Julie (1956) for a long time. A stalker thriller with Doris Day as an airline stewardess on the run from her obsessed, homicidal second husband! That sounds like it should be solid. I found it mostly a bit tiresome and sluggishly paced, though Day is excellent. Apparently this was a movie she didn't want to do because her first two marriages had been abusive themselves. That experience of fear and despair is definitely manifest in Day's acting, and at times, it's heartbreaking to watch.
The ending is truly bonkers. After an hour of basic "my husband is insane" thriller boilerplate, the film basically turns into a 1970s disaster movie with Doris having to save the day. Also, 1910s movie star Mae Marsh shows up as a hysterical passenger on the ill-fated flight. It's so surreal seeing her in a talkie, even in a small part like this.
Idk. Maybe I was expecting this to be more like Gaslight or Day's other woman in peril thriller, Midnight Lace. My thoughts aren't coherent. Daylight Savings Time has sapped my ability to type lol.
