{Ok, so I need to say something about it because... it’s probably one of the things I hate the most about being in a fandom, and especially in the Shadowhunters’ one: the war between people who like the books and those who are more into the show. I was on Facebook a minute ago, looking at the post on the show’s page and there was that comment saying this :
“ I highly suggest that everyone read the books. Both the Mortal instruments and the clockwork books. So much better than the show.”
I don’t care about which is better and I’m not gonna start an argument about it here, but I need to say: if you hate the show that much, why are you commenting on a page about the show? I mean... it’s the fucking sneak peak of next week episode. Ok, it seems Lorenzo isn’t a canon character, it seems Magnus never lose his High Warlock title in the books, but WHO FUCKING CARE? I mean, we all know when a book is turned into a movie or a TV shows, changes happen. Dumbledore didn’t ask calmly if Harry put his name in the goblet of fire, the Hobbit turned into three movies and placed a silly love story between an elve and a dwarf (Ok, that one was too much for my poor heart), Alice In Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass movies were truly divergent from the original texts.
These movies and shows are INSPIRED by books, but they’re not the books. According to the Thesaurus, here is one of the multiple definitions of inspire:
“ to animate, as an influence, feeling, thought, or the like, does: They were inspired by a belief in a better future.”
An influence. The show is influenced by the books but, to make it unique, the showrunners are making some changes in it, exploring different ways so even those who read the books would be surprised instead of already knowing what’s coming.
As for myself, I tried to read the books several times after I watched the movie and before it turned into a Netflix show. For various reasons, I was never able to enjoy the story either in French (my mother language) or in English (because I tend to enjoy the books more if they are in English). I just can’t enter that universe through the author’s words and I’m not going to force myself. I can read five books per weeks, no matter if they’re in French or English, but these are a big no, BUT I truly love the show, the way they are making it and how they manage to bring me into that world and make my heart skip several beats everytime something happens to one of my favourite characters.
So yes... please, just stop putting hate on people or judging them because of something as stupid as reading the books or not. Just let them enjoy their version of the Mortal Instruments, either it’s on paper or on screen.}
