I miss traveling and was inspired to look at some travel pictures.
Maeshowe’s Runes
Maeshowe, a large neolithic tomb probably made around 2800 BC on the Orkney Islands in Scotland, was looted by the Vikings Earl Harald Maddadarson and Ragnvald, Earl of Møre around the 12th century. Because of this, a lot of runic inscriptions can be found inside, making Maeshowe one of the largest collection of runic graffiti in Europe.
Here’s a few samples:
"Arnfithr Matr carved these runes with this axe owned by Gauk Trandilsson in the South land"
"Is to me said that treasure is here hidden very well. Say few as Oddr"
"These runes were carved by the man most skilled in runes in the western ocean"
"Ingigerth is the most beautiful of all women"
"(...) Lif the earl's cook carved these runes. To the north-west is a great treasure hidden. It was long ago that a great treasure was hidden here. Happy is he that might find that great treasure. (...)"
"Thorni f█cked. Helgi carved this"
"Tholfir Kolbeinsson carved these runes high up"

On my visit to Orkney, I was impressed by the number of Neolithic and prehistoric sites. One of the most impressive is Maeshowe, famous for its midwinter alignment. “In the weeks leading up to the winter solstice, the darkest time of the Orcadian year, the last rays of the setting sun shine through Maeshowe's entrance passage to pierce the darkness of the chambered cairn....To the users of Maeshowe, just as it still does today, the return of the sun heralded a resurgence of light and the return of life to the land.
Honestly I just miss Orkney so much (!!!) I visited them for the first time almost a year ago and I just love them. It's my favourite part of Scotland. We hired bikes and miscalculated distances and looked like old ladies biking. And it was hard but so much fun. It's just incredible to me how a week can make long for a place. Literally today I though: Why the fuck didn't I plan another trip to Scotland for this year? Sometimes I lay on bed and I think about Orkney, I might be in love. We didn't get to visit all that we wanted and now I feel sad. How's Orkney in September? I really wanna go again this year.
This is fucking weird for me, usually I dread travelling and am so lazy but just thinking about Ornkey. Makes. Me. Happy.
It's really windy and we had such a hard time biking but I just wanna go back. It's freaking gorgeous. Skara Brae, Maes Howe, the Ring of Brodgar, Birsay, Stromness...
