Ash peers into the small shop, glancing around the threshold. From where he stands, there is no one in sight. He pulls open the door and steps inside tentatively, the small bell emitting a soft sound that signifies his entrance.
He is at the shop in search of his younger sister, Maeve. His recent conversations with Janarik the dwarf led him to wanting to seek out his sister, whom he had not had any real interactions with in many years.
I wonder if she is in today, Ash thinks. Some part of him wishes she weren’t. Honestly, the thought of speaking to Maeve after so many years of virtual silence terrifies him.
As he looks around the shop, and thinks about all that he has been told by Janarik about her work as an apprentice seamstress, Ash recalls all that he has missed in Maeve’s life. He is overcome, suddenly, by guilt and a strange type of melancholy.
Suddenly, his thoughts are disrupted when someone enters from the back door.
