V would definitely only realise his feeings after Cheecky’s death (breaking my own heart again)

The lyrics hit a little too hard because theyre quite specific, I made them gender neutral though

V realising he needed Cheeky to be the light and warmth of his life because after they died it got way too dark and he became even colder. His little darling wasn’t there to hold him or make him feel better in any kind of way.

“You see them when you close your eyes. Maybe one day, you'll understand why everything you touch surely dies.”

He can’t get them out of his head. Their kind eyes and smile, their gentle touches and soft demeanour. Even as they lay dying in his arms, they smiled up at him, their warm hand pressed against his cheek for one last time.

“Staring at the ceiling in the dark, same old empty feeling in your heart. 'Cause love comes slow, and it goes so fast”

He feels empty and cold without them. It took him so long to realize he loved them and they were gone before he ever had to chance to tell them. It seems like everyone he cares about ends up dead because he wasn’t able to protect them.

“Well, you see them when you fall asleep. But never to touch and never to keep”

He dreams about them, about memories with them. The way he regrets avoiding their gentle touch when they initiated affection and now craving it. But it will always be just out of his reach because even his dreams turn into nightmares once he remembers what happened to them.

Every night was a battlefield unlike any other the minute you were ripped from his life, seemingly destined to be like every other version of you...

But your death came much later than before.

As he wakes from nightmares screaming and sobbing - he some times wished he never met you.

Never got to know your kindness and warmth.

Never fell in love with you.

But even he is long since aware that he could never regret any of that.

Sometimes his dreams were kind to him, gifting him loving visions, but even then it left him feeling hollow at the reminder.

... He knew maybe the gods would be merciful enough to give him his whole afterlife to show you how much you meant to him; if they didn't drag him to hell for his misdeeds.

V knew something for certain though....

A Moment of Silence

It is way to early for him to wake, his body shakes him from rest. Like there is a disruption thrumming through the energy he'd used to protect the house, eyes darting open as the chill from his side made him realize something.

A shot of panic rattled his heart and he shot up from bed.

Where were you?

Eyes darting about the dark room.

He felt you before he saw you, his superior senses honing in on the disruption in your magic.

He's out of the bed faster than he can admit, crossing the threshold of the space into the kitchenette. The hotel was pretty shitty, but the little space was an acceptable accommodation for two people on the run.

V smelt the blood before his gaze focused upon you, knelt on the tile floor and shakily picking up glass shards.

Quiet as a mouse, intent on not waking him.

A pang rung through his chest.

"Cheeky." His voice is low, even.

You still jumped, head snapping at him in a moment of fear.

But settled back into the feelings of frustration and distress, attention focused back on the task.

"Sorry," You set the last large shard in the trash bin, though your red stained hands shook "did I wake you?"

He watched you, studying the expression twisted on your face for a moment.

You didn't look up, quietly continuing, "I couldn't sleep."

Lie.

The dark circles ringing your sleepy eyes meant that you would have just fell over if you wanted to, exhaustion sweeping like a wave off of your skin.

V reached and grabbed your wrists to stop you, brows furrowing.

A sort of achy, twisted feeling wrapped around his ribs, leaving knots wrapping up in the pit of his stomach as he watched the blood continue to seep from the little cuts on your soft hands.

“Go sit on the couch, I’ll take care of it.”

There is a barest hint of a flinch as his tone and you opened your mouth to protest.

But his ruby gaze was darker than usual; though they practically glowed in the dim light. There is something in them that make you understand that it wasn’t a request.

Just like that, you drifted to the little love seat. Holding your hands just so they didn’t drip all over the carpets and floors.

Over the sounds of cars and the low hum of industrial lights, of crickets and Corporation sirens... Was the sound of glass being moved from the kitchen.

The moment allowed you to think.

As you peer down at the crimson mess that was your sliced palms.

Blood.

An almost earth shattering shudder rushed through you, followed with the gnarled, mangled images of bodies flashing across your peripherals like horrid ghosts. Young children; innocent and helpless, torn from life from a monster that had no right to living. The sounds of their screams that he forced into your skull, bouncing around, taunting you.

Holding V’s broken body in your arms.

A sob welled in your throat but you held it back, clenching your hands into fists.

It hurt.

But the sting was a reminder.

This was the present.

The Atrocity wasn’t here.

You were safe.

“I’ll always find you, little light, there is nowhere you can hide.”

A whimper wretched from you at the sound of that awful voice.

“Stop.”

V’s hands.

Warm.

So warm.

Touching your wrists.

Your fists loosen.

Vision completely consumed with the sight of his piercing gaze.

Dark and deep and red.

More like wine than rubies or blood or roses.

Deep enough to drown in.

His forehead was resting against your’s, a low hum from his chest in a familiar tune... A lullaby, a nursery rhyme of some sort.

Reminding you of fields away from the city, a night full of stars and catching fireflies.

Of long days basking in the summer sun.

Watching the blue sky underneath the surface of the water.

Settled in a cabin near the fireplace

Comforting.

His fingers slip across the cuts.

They seal, making you hiss as they close under his gentle care.

The tune continued as he remained where he was, cradling your delicate hands in his own - both pairs now caked in dry blood.

But you’re too busy watching his eyes.

Watching his face; peaceful and beautiful.

Nearly perfect in his repose.

He squeezed, just tight enough to ache - to ground you in the moment.

V never looked away, never took his eyes off of you.

You knew that he knew what you saw, what compelled you to leave the bed. That ripped you also from his protective embrace. But he spoke not of it, not of your fear getting the best of you.

“Come on,” He tugged and drew you to him “while I think you’re more just perfection, I’m sure you need your beauty sleep.”

You didn’t fight him.

Only making yourself comfortable, locked in his arms.

At home in them.

Im such a sucker for the sunshiny character getting hurt and the villain losing his absolute shit. I secretly really hope Scythe lets this happen at some point

V gets mad quite easily, but somebody hurting his Cheeky? The literal light of his life? A new kind of rage he feels right then and there

The aftermath of it; V gently laying Cheeky on a bed and trying his best to heal them, him feeling very vulnerable now that the places are kind of switched and he cant do much else than just hope they wake up

Gawd I need some kinda one shot of this, its too good-

I also love that trope and want to see more of it.

Because while V is short tempered and such... Righteous fury surrounding a loved one is a whole different bag. The possible loss of someone he cares about... Loves even, without knowing that they'll return for him to tell them how he feels....

That's just something else entirely.

V has felt love before, but love with the Soulstress was suffocating and lined with blood and fear and death.

... Love with Cheeky is gentle and warm, they don't force or project these feelings on him because they love him unconditionally.

He feels safe with Cheeky and we know how he hates being vulnerable around people.

Cheeky being mentally harmed is enough to make him upset, that scene within one of the facilities is evident of that.

After giving their enemy the equivalent of a bleeding ticket to hell, he does kind of panic and rush away to take care of Cheeky. Calling up who he can with healing knowledge to make sure they come back to him.

Meanwhile, all he's thinking is that world couldn't survive if Cheeky died.

That his sanity would not prevail if they were gone.

The idea of one of the biggest spots of GOOD in this world, the only light magic user left disappearing from it...

V would not be the same.

Maybe it would have been less dramatic if he could have prepared for this but who could?

At least Cheeky followed him still but... He was wondering if they were doing so based on that they cared or because it was important to their survival.

Ss he witnesses this new version of them...

He decided to do something about it.

Subtly at first, of course, he didn't know how to talk about it or even begin to bring it up

Of course, that wasn't going to be enough.

On the contrary, it actually seems to frustrate them a bit. As of they were annoyed that he was showing them affection now of all times...

But eventually, he attempts further, sets apart time to take them to their favorite pubs or even a place specifically for fun... He just does know what to do at first but is then hit with the most obvious solution.

Talking to them.

Show them that they mean something, anything to him, that he missed and loved those parts of them and that....

The world had a lot of cold hearted cynics...

But they needed someone like Cheeky.

He needed someone like his Cheeky.

Can we talk about how worried V sounded when Cheeky wanted to figt Void? That man was STRESSED

While intensely chaotic, he has his priorities straight. V is also intensely aware that Cheeky is very outclassed in a lot of senses.

He's just generally very concerned because well... Void did have Cheeky locked away to train them.

Just keeping them safe seems to stress him out.

I didn't need this today but here we are; V just lamenting over the possibility or the knowledge he might not be able to keep Cheeky happy. So is willing to let them be happy by stepping away.

Doesn't even think about how they'd feel and feels like he's being realistic
