23- “You’re safe here.”
How did you get here?
How did you end up on the side of a building in a bad area of town, desperately clutching together the two frayed ends of what used to be the front of your shirt, cuts and bruises leaking blood over your previously unharmed skin?
You can’t remember the full story, even though it only happened a few minutes ago. All you remember is walking home from work, eyes glued to the paperwork in your hand which you had to have memorized by the next day and being stopped by a man in a suit. After that, you were attacked from behind and taken to some compound. You know you were there for days, being beaten and asked for information on a Kwon Soonyoung, but you weren’t able to provide any as you’d never even heard the name. You can’t remember anything about the compound other than the metal roof, and you can’t remember anything about any of the people there except the clothes they were wearing.
You don’t even notice the van passing until you hear someone yell “Stop,” through an open window. You flinch, a tear slipping from your eye as you curl yourself into a ball, pain rippling through your body.
“Are you okay? Do you need help?” The same voice questions you softly, gently pressing the palm of his hand to your shoulder and ducking his head to try and see your face.
Terrified, you let out a sob and hope for him to go away. Instead, he turns back to his van and yells, “She’s not responding, take her. Be gentle, looks like he got her good.” And then he steps away. No-one speaks a word, complying to his commands in silence. Someone wraps you in a blanket, and the other lifts you into his arms. Pain ripples through you, a wince scrunching up your face.
“Careful!” The main one hisses as the one holding you hands you off to another person in the van. “Put her to sleep.” He says.
You freeze, covering your mouth as if to fight an attack, but you’re so weak from being held before that it doesn’t take anything more than gentle coaxing to overpower you, and you’re knocked out.
It was almost like you were at home when you woke up. The bed was soft and warm, your clothes felt clean and , and your hair wasn’t matted or dirty. For awhile, with your eyes closed, you didn’t even notice the pain in your snapped ankle, much less any other damages.
Softly groaning, you start to roll over, stopping within seconds as burning pain began to spread up from your ankle.
“Good morning.” A voice interrupts your thoughts. Your eyes shoot wide open, but you remain facing the wall away from him. Everything visible to you is white. The walls, the pillow, the comforter, and even the small lamp hanging off the wall by the bed are completely white. “Turn and look at me please. I’m not going to hurt you, i just want to talk.”
He reaches forward, turning you to face him with a gentle grip on your shoulder.
He observes you for a minute before he slowly reaches out to push a strand of hair from your eye. “I know it must be scary, but you’re safe here. Trust me.” He whispers. “I need you to tell me who did this to you.”
You know your voice can’t be trusted before you even open your mouth, but still you do it. “What does it matter now?” You ask, voice croaky. “The damage has been done.”
He chuckles, dropping his hand back down to his lap and shaking his head slowly. “It’s not that simple. If this was who i think, and i just got you care, i can’t let you go or you might be killed. Please, i need to know who did this to you.”
How do you tell him you don’t know?
“I- uh, i don’t remember.” You stutter, eyes cast down to your hands resting on the soft white fabric. “There were a lot of them. I don’t remember what they looked like.”
“None of them?” He interrupts hopefully. “I just need a description of one.
You shake your head, whispering “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay,” he says, sitting back up in his chair, further from you. “I’m sorry i have to keep you here.”
