Not my circus, not my monkeys
I know Color is a pretty personal thing. Especially when it comes to your wardrobe. Some people take naturally to a wide variety of hues while others are more restrained. Then there are those of us who choose to stick mostly to black. Sure, there are other colors mixed in. But your wardrobe reveals your allegiance to the one color that can look classic, edgy, or avant-garde — all depending on which pieces you want to wear and how you choose to style them. We’re all about monochromatic outfits (for everyone). But there’s one potential pitfall of wearing black head to toe all the time: Black can get a little boring.
1. Keep things classic
The easiest way to make a statement, even if it feels boring to dress in a single color? Choose ultra-classic pieces to elevate the look. Anybody can throw on a black ensemble anchored by a trendy coat or the footwear that’s au courant. It takes a more deft sense of style to combine timeless pieces into an all-black outfit. This look on stylist Mag Payne includes classic building blocks: the winter coat, slim pants, and Chelsea boots. Combined, they look elegant and elevated — about as far from boring as you could possibly get.
2. Add an accessory
Another foolproof way to jazz up a monochromatic outfit? Add an accessory that provides a bit of contrast or keep it calm. And if that’s not a distinction worth aiming for when you get dressed in the morning, we don’t know what is.
3. Show a bit of skin
Many of us default to all-black ensembles in the winter, when we’re cocooned in as many layers as we can comfortably wear. But if the temperatures aren’t sub-zero, then you may want to break up the look by showing a little (just a little) bit of skin. In this look, photographer Seye Kehinde opts for distressed jeans with zip pants, a move that successfully adds some edge to an otherwise classic, zipped-up look. Worried about the heat you’ll lose by baring your arms? Add a wool hat, just like Seye.
4. Go for some really unexpected footwear
Maybe a pair of brown boots with a black outfit isn’t “unexpected” enough for you. If so, you’ll love this outfit on Actor Timini Egbuson. Instead of going for the sleek black boot, you might expect to see paired with this short, Timini wears a pair of clunky Black sneakers instead. For the right person, this is a fun, expectation-defying, and comfortable way to switch up an all-black outfit.
5. BELT IT
Yes, Belts? Huge or Slim. Adding a metallic or colored belt works for two reasons: First, it’s a manly touch that pops on an all-black background. Second, it adds extra slimming power to an already flattering color palette.

5 TIPS ON HOW TO STYLE AN ALL BLACK OUTFIT
Toying with perspective, composition, and themes. Stylist Mag Payne presents gorgeous model Oyelola Oyewo as an ethereal and radiantly beautiful creature in his interview with Daniel Baora. Fashion by Mag Payne dresses her in a selection of Mag Payne. While Feyi Patts finishes the look with an incredibly eye-catching makeup.
How are you keeping motivated while being indoors?
Due to the Covid-19, I have had spare time to learn new things to improve my content and my work. I also went into creating videos with the Tik Tok application.
How would you describe your signature look?
I am a colourful and cosy person, and I love simplicity with the occasional touch of colours.
How do you determine a client’s personal style?
Well, people most often impose their idea of style on clients; which shouldn’t be. Although it is okay to know how you want a client to look like, that shouldn’t be your go-to process when styling. So for me, I try as much as possible to have a discussion with my clients. If it’s an artist, I listen to your music so I could be in sync with your vibe and understand the type of things you would like – then we have a discussion(show me what you would like to see yourself in and what you want to look like). Then I combine all this together and create your style.
Who are your style influences? Where do you get your inspiration from?
Fashion-wise I fancy a lot of people who are versatile as Asap Rocky, Travis Scott and Gully Guy Leo. I also try to be as open-minded as possible so it doesn’t look like I am copying peoples style. I do a lot of research and also use Pinterest and Vogue to see new things on the runway
What trend would you most like to see disappear?
Hmmm! That’s a bit dicey, I can’t quite say.
What’s the process? Will you help me create looks from my current wardrobe or will we go shopping?
It really comes down to what you want. If you are working on a budget or have them and need me to show you how to put them together. I open you up to different options by creating a mood board for you, then proceed in giving you options on how you want us to work as a team. I could either shop or you as your personal shopper or just your stylist.
Which current trends would you incorporate in your clothing selections?
I love colours and anything comfortable. Although, this day I am a lot more loose pants and pink or peach.
What can we expect from you in the future?
I am working on a collection as I plan to make my brand bigger. I am hoping to be able to do retail because my fashion is a lot more urban. Brands that I envision myself becoming are Zara, Asos. They sell economic fashion with a slight luxury. Zara is pretty affordable and that’s where I see my fashion. I am not big on luxuries like Gucci or Louis Vuitton. If I was told to choose a brand of those two I envision for myself, it would definitely be a Zara.
