Writing system and pronunciation

These are the letters that make up the script: अ आ इ ई उ ऊ ऎ ए ऐ ऒ ओ ॵ औ अँ क ख ग घ ङ च छ ज झ ञ ट ठ ड ढ ण त थ द ध न प फ ब भ म य र ल व श ष स ह.

Stress coincides with pitch levels.

Grammar

Nouns have two numbers (singular and plural) and seven cases (nominative, accusative-dative, genitive, locative, instrumental, purposive, and adlative).

There is no gender in personal pronouns or adjectives. There are three groups of adjectives. Some take gender suffixes when they accompany nouns that refer to women or female animals.

Verbs are conjugated for tense, mood, aspect, person, and number. Second- and third-person verbal forms have three degrees of politeness.

Dialects

There are six dialects: Kurmali, Khontai, Kurmali Thar, Khotta, Pargania, and Tamaria. They are sometimes classified into Standard, Eastern, Western, and Mixed Magahi.
