i forgive you. / @starsspin.
as emotionless as nate preferred to act, he was very aware of the guilt and sadness that engulfed his heart and soul. that’s why he had started drinking in the first place, to alleviate those gnawing feelings. he found out rather quickly that the booze was just being poured into a black hole in his chest, never filling up, just feeding his sorrows, but then he couldn’t stop. he had lost his son, his wife, his work, his life. rockbottom was his home for some time, and then he discovered a new purpose: helping those who had no one else to help them. nate was back on his feet, for better or worse, and he was proud that maggie got to see it. that she could stand beside him and talk to him, like he had never hurt her.
the three words she speaks causes part of the chasm inside of him to close. not all of it. just enough that nate feels like he could breathe again for the first time in years. i forgive you. of course, he doesn’t think he deserves it, nor will he be able to accept it fully with the guilt he still harbors within himself. but hearing her say it - after becoming a drunk, keeping the truth about their son’s death from her, becoming a criminal, lying to her - it allowed nate just a moment of peace. head lowers, as if he’s trying to hide from her, eyes and small grin meeting maggie’s before he looks away again. ‘ that’s kind of you, ’ nate finally speaks, crossing his arms over his chest. ‘ not sure if i’ve earned it yet, but i’ll... keep trying, ’ silently, he promises he will.
