8. favorite month of the year and why?
OCTOBER. And for so many reasons. I'm a spooky season gal. Love horror films and all that, yes, but I am also a death-positive lady, constantly trying to acknowledge my own mortality and how that makes life so much more precious. That's such a central tenet for me and October not only embraces that with all the skeletons and ghosts, but in the change of the season as plants "die" and sleep. It starts getting darker faster and seems to pull the world to a quieter place. It's very introspective and I love that.
It's also when the best foods come out! It's the start of holiday season! I hate hate hate sweating and October's when the weather finally starts coming back to my level. The skies are clearer and the stars sharper in October. Orion starts to rise at night. The world has so many good smells (spices) and sounds (dry leaves) and the wind is present but tame. It's also when the busiest part of my year is wrapped up and I can get on with some more personal business.
October's when I feel most like myself.

13. what's something you learned recently?
It's not unusual for humans to go several days without lifting their arms above their heads. Studies have shown that even a few minutes of arm movement in the morning after waking can have significant positive impacts on long-term health! Radio Taiso is a popular tradition in many East Asian cultures that's not only for community building, but good for you! If you play Animal Crossing and have ever gone to the morning calisthenics, your character is participating in Radio Taiso. You'll find these workouts in several factories, business, schools, and parks--basically anywhere there are people--all over Japan, China, Taiwan, South Korea, etc. For a few minutes each morning, they'll come together to not only greet the day with their neighbors or coworkers, but to get physically ready to meet the day. I've known about (and participated) in this tradition before, but it was only recently that I read the fact about how infrequently we raise our arms. Yes, reaching for things, yes, if you play sports.... But for the majority of us, it's actually less than what you'd assume and I realized that I'm one of those many. So guess who's waking up and tuning in Tokyo (literally) lately?
