ACCEPTED! Maggie McCarthy Audition
They used to go to the park on Wednesdays after she'd picked Tommy up from school, feed the ducks in the pond and sit on the bench closest to the water and throw stones. He would tell her about his day, about all the things they did, about story time with the older kids and how he missed nap time from last year but they still had snack time - "pretzel goldfish is my favorite" - so that was alright. She would push him on the swings and he would squeal in delight - "higher, mommy, higher!" - and then they would go home and she would let him help her cook dinner. She always said she got lucky with him becuase Tommy loved vegetables, expect for green beans. They were yucky.
She watches her swing on Tommy's favorite swing, a little girl with long chestnut hair and a sweet smile who's brother ran off to play football with his friends in the field. Her long powder blue skirt blows slightly in the wind as she looks around for him, sitting there for a moment as the swing slowly comes to a stop and she gets up from the seat like she's going to go running after him but before she can even take a few steps, the poor thing trips over the hem of her skirt and falls to the ground. Maggie watches for a moment, not completely sure what to do but as the girl struggles to pick herself back up, she stands and starts to walk towards her, a worried frown flitering over her face when the little girl gets to her feet, tears welling up in her baby blue eyes.
"Are you okay?" She asks and the girl turned teary eyes towards her, shaking her head and holding her wrist to her chest, "Come on, let's go find your momma, okay?" The little girl just nods and reaches for her hand like Tommy used to when he was scared, looking around frantically for her mother, her brother, someone she knew.
"Lily!" Someone screams and the little girl's head whips to the side and Maggie watches as a middle-aged woman in a pair of faded jeans and a black tshirt comes jogging towards them, a look of utter painc on her face.
She lets go of Lily's hand and watches the girl run to the woman, arms outstreched and the woman instantly picks up the little girl and hugs her to her chest. Maggie looks at them both and gives a small, sweet smile, "She fell off the swings, landed pretty hard. I-- I think she hurt her wrist. She didn't know where you were so we came to find you."
"Oh god, thank you," the woman says, looking at her for a moment before she turns all attention to the bundle in her arms as she kisses her forhead and smiling when the little girl pulls a face at the treatment, wrist pain apparently already forgotten, "I was so worried about her. Her brother ran off and he didn't know where she was-- Thank you so much, I don't know what I would have done if I had lost her. Lily, what do you say to the nice lady?"
Lily looks at her with big blue eyes and smiles shyly, "Thank you."
Maggie smiles at her, "You're so very welcome, sweetheart. Have a nice night, ma'am."
"You too, dear, you too." The woman says and she turns, calling out for her son as she does. Lily looks over her mother's shoulder and waves to her. She can't help but wave back.
She fights tears the whole way home.
Your Interpretation of the Character:
To me, Maggie is the epitome of girl-next-door, the unassuming good girl that you can always count on to be sweet and innocent. The one that everyone liked because she never said anything bad about anyone no matter how much they might deserve it. She's been in the background all her life, the girl that you overlooked in school because she was shy and reserved and didn't reall talk much in class outside of answering questions when called on and that's the way she liked it, she never wanted to be in the spotlight. She wanted to be ordinary, she wanted to be that all-America girl.
When her boyfriend left her when he found out she was pregnant, a part of her heart died. Still to this day, she thought she loved him. Since that day, she almost stopped trusting people completely, she shuts herself off to relationships and friendships because she doesn't want to be hurt again. She doesn't want to go through that heartbreak, she doesn't think that she'll be able to take it a second time around.
When she had Tommy something about Maggie changed, it was like something slid into place for her. Maggie has never had a temper and she has always been patient but with Tommy she never raised her voice, never shouted, never did anything that could scare him. She was gentle and sweet and always considerate of every move that she made. She wanted the best for him from day one and she was ready to give up everything for him. She did everything in her power to protect him from all the bad in the world and the day that he disappeared something inside her broke. She began shutting down, shutting everyone out and the only person she trusted was herself. She smiles less now and she doesn't think that she will ever be happy again until she finds Tommy. That's all she's living for; finding her baby boy and bringing him home.
