So are the gems magic or what? I'm confused as to whether they're aliens with advanced tech or magical constructs. Maybe both?
both! Something I really love about this show is that it combines fantasy elements (magic) with sci-fi elements when often times those are considered contradictions. From my understanding, Gems are tech savvy aliens who have natural magical properties. Their tech augments their magical abilities and vice-versa, like they use tech both to support/enable their magical abilities as well as make up for their short-comings.
of course, its possible that once we learn more about the Gems it will become less ‘fantasy’ and more ‘sci-fi’, depending on their origin because they could have a decidedly sci-fi origin (like, if they’re some kind of robot). But they could also have a very much magical origin. Right now they’re pretty much right in the middle.
