Anxiety is no joke. For some it can be crippling, and drastically reduce their quality of life.
I know because I’ve been there. And although my anxiety isn’t as bad as it once was, I still do experience anxiety.
But! I have since learned how to better manage that anxiety. And I know that is largely in part due to magnesium. One factor in that transition was switching to a diet consisting of whole foods. This dramatically increased the amount of magnesium in my body.
I then started to notice that I would feel less anxious. I have since learned that having adequate amounts of magnesium in the body is critically important for our wellbeing.
This is because it is involved in several hundred enzymatic reactions. And many of these reactions contribute to the production of energy, cardiovascular function, and so much more.
However, due to a combination of factors many of us are chronically magnesium deficient.
And this is one contributing factor as to why anxiety levels (and other health related problems) are at all time highs and continue to increase every year.
For those can’t get enough magnesium through their diet, supplementation can help.
And that’s great news! - Because magnesium is considered the “anti-stress” mineral. So where do we get it anyway?
Emphasis will be on the vegetable kingdom and seafood has a fairly high amount.
- Dark green vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, kale, and brussel sprouts are excellent sources.
- Nuts such as Brazil nuts, almonds, walnuts, cashew nuts, hazelnuts, pecans, pistachios, and peanuts.
- Seeds such as sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and tahini.
- The whole grains, particularly wheat (especially the bran and germ) quinoa, and oatmeal.
- Most nuts seeds and legumes have high amounts of magnesium. Black beans are one of my personal favorites
- Other sources include avocados, bananas, figs, and of course dark chocolate!
