witches are the primary beings that magical girls are dutied to fight under kyubeys law. they conceal themselves within astral spaces known as labyrinths. witches can form in many different ways such as through grief, a magical girl transforming into a witch, egregores of already existing witches in the puella magi universe and even familiars becoming witches themselves! familiars are essentially created from a witches essence and soon form into a carbon copy of their parent witch, forming its own grief seed.
／人◕ ‿‿ ◕人＼ HOW DO I HUNT A WITCH AS A MAGICAL GIRL ?
hunting witches, whether its in the astral or not, requires actual legwork since you need to seek out their barriers. there are hotspots for witch activity such as hospitals, centers of disappearances and places people go to commit suicide. as a magical girl, you should already have the ability to sense negative energy. ( thats the absolute basics of being a magical girl or practicing any type of witchcraft ) do you feel a negative energy emanating from a specific space? does a spot feel strange when you pass by? this is the barrier to the labyrinth. sit by the barrier and begin to meditate. focus on the point of contact ( the area in which you sensed the energy ) until you can see a clear picture of the sigil of the witch. if you are in an area where it is unsafe to meditate for a prolonged period of time, you can stop and jot down an image of the sigil. use this to fight the witch remotely later. if you are in a safe position to stay for a long period of time, continue. engage your henshin and let your astral body step through the labyrinth. once youre in, explore or fight the witch ! once you have beat the witch, grab your grief seed and purify your soul gem before the labyrinth dissipates.
( this is all much easier once you fully physically shift, if thats what you want to do, you can always be an astral magi though :3 )
