*Press conference* @belvederemuseum To celebrate the 300th birthday of Josef Ignaz Mildorfer (1719–1775), the Belvedere is honouring the Baroque painter with an exhibition as part of its IN-SIGHT series. The exhibition focuses on three key aspects of his artistic work: his rare battle scenes, his role as a professor of painting at the Vienna Academy of Arts, and his commissions from the clergy, aristocracy, and the bourgeoisie. Mildorfer was born into an artist family in Innsbruck in 1719. He studied and taught at the Vienna academy of fine arts around 1750. The Academy was at some respects a center of the Viennese Avantgarde. Mildorfer was part of this development that questioned the established artistic maxims. In this sense Josef Ignaz Mildorfer was one of the rebels of the Austrian late Baroque style. His work was defined by a quest for bold solutions. This is revealed in his rare battle paintings and in many of his works for various patrons. These two themes along with his work at the academy are the main threads of the Exhibition.
