35. As a goodbye
Warning: VERY WORDY HOLY SHIT
This was the last time Mai could ever see Pix. Mai’s parents objected, very loudly, to their friendship, to their romance, and banned them from seeing each other, ever. They even contacted the school to make sure that they wouldn’t ever meet again.
So Pix was going to never eat in the cafeteria with the normal boots guys- who were also her friends- ever again.
Mai slunk through the night shadows, hand grazing the wall as a guide. She kept leaning against it, even as she reached the place where they would meet. Pix’s purple hair was spotted on the opposite side of the bricks Mai leaned against, and she walked forward. “...Pix?”
Pix looked to Mai, then dashed forward, colliding into Mai. “Mai, I’m so sorry,” Pix mumbled, squeezing the taller girl tight, “It’s my fault that our relationship got found out.”
“No, it was mine.”
“No, really! I made a comment about it at your family dinner, even after you told me not to-” Pix sniffed, trying to hold back tears, “-and now we can’t even see each other again... I don’t think...” Pix trailed off, starting to think.
Mai looked down, rubbing Pix’s head. “Don’t think what?”
“...I don’t think we can continue being girlfriends, even in secret.”
Mai froze. “Why?”
“Someone’s going to notice-” Pix waved around, “This, sooner or later, and knowing the school, they’re going to heavily patrol the area for years after we left, preventing other students from keeping their relationships secret, as well. Y-Y’know, I don’t want to be the cause of that.”
Mai’s face fell. “...That’s true, but... what if we don’t?”
“We will. I’m lucky I got Susan for a roommate again this year, but with anybody else, they would’ve reported it already.” Pix stepped away from Mai, green eyes looking away from her. “So... I think... I think we should break up.”
Mai made a noise. Pix looked at her with concern, then hurridly explained, “Not that we don’t love each other, I love you, but-” Pix looked sad again. “... i love you... but I don’t think all the time separated and coming back and separating again will be good for us.”
Mai mentally grabbed the words ‘i love you’ out of the air and into her mental box. She was going to remember this at night for the rest of her time at asagao. “...You’re right.” She admitted, looking away from Pix. “...So... break up time?”
“Break up.”
There was a silence in the air as the decision settled in, and Pix looked sad. She started stepping away, obviously thinking of something to say. “...Bye, Mai.”
“Bye, Pix. I love you.” Mai said back, and she spotted Pix tighten up briefly. Then, the shorter girl turned around and started to run away. Mai watched the dust settle after she did so, and headed back herself, sad frown on her face.
Mai remembered how sad Pix got after the first time a possible relationship was broken because of Mai or someone close to Mai... and now she was willingly causing it to herself?
