adverbs are considered controversial by many writers because they lack clarity in how an action is taken and described. like, some people say it's lazy to write with them because it's a very 'amateur' descriptor and you should substitute them with more colorful descriptions. like, for example someone describes someone having "ran quickly" instead of describing it as something like "with fever, she dashed through the thicket" tbh it's really not that bad to describe things with adverbs but many professional writers advise against it because it makes a story lack clarity and be more up to interpretation of a character's actions 🤷♀️ which i can understand but also idk if it's really that much of a sin bc it depends on how you want your audience to respond to the story and if the story is told from a specific pov (like an unreliable narrator)
HI I’M SORRY I JUST SAW THIS (tumblr doesn’t notify me when i get asks?????)
thank you! it’s still very weird to me! like obviously you don’t want to overuse them and all, but i do feel like there are times where it’s much easier and effective to use them. i feel like having a character’s actions have multiple interpretations is a good thing sometimes too, but i can understand why a lot of people wouldn’t like this in fiction and writing as a whole.
i think a lot of this is personal preference, and wanting new or inexperienced writers to think a little more “outside the box” with describing things. but i feel like going into depth about all actions rather than the ones you WANT to be important can really take away from the writing as well. it’s just up to a writer to find the balance between not using a lot of adverbs and not overexplaining things to a distracting degree.
