{Ooooohboy. Here we go. This is gonna be long. I’ll put a cut at some point so it doesn’t pollute too much.

Okay, so... Against all odds I was NOT expecting the episode to go that way? For one thing, I’m really glad Matsuzo’s not dead. This would’ve been the worst scenario and I don’t know how the family would’ve been able to recover from it. I’m glad The Man is okay...

With that said, I am SO CURIOUS to see where they’re going with this, and if they’re actually gonna find, this time, some half-baked way to make this plot march on and be like “this is a happy ending”, or be trolls all the way through. And... Is it bad that I’m STILL wishing for the latter?

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t as depressing as “Letter”. At the very least it’s a lot more realistic. The Big Bad of starting to work, forgetting your own personality and priorities and getting separated from everyone doesn’t appear suddenly and for no reason. It’s done progressively. The boys don’t leave home. They start working for the very valid reason that they wanna care for their parents, which is sweet, and probably the reason why most people start seeking work. But... That in itself is also pretty depressing in more cunning ways. You force yourself to do “the right thing”, and because it feels so right, you feel proud, and you keep marching on showing everyone (especially yourself) how good you’re doing, not noticing how the loneliness and the loss of your real self (and of the belief you had a “real self” in the first place) settle in until it’s too late.

And that’s where the red sunset and the bright blue rain come in.

(Side note: I kept wondering “Which depressing music are they gonna be using for the strong scenes this time?”. Kudos to the show for still surprising me by using NO BACKGROUND MUSIC AT ALL. It’s all carried by the strong visuals, the little background noises, Sakurai’s TOP-NOTCH voice acting and Endo’s occasional, oddly sympathetic-with-no-bullshit responses. Great directing choices if I ever knew any.)

But yeah. Oso’s questions aren’t uncalled for at all, and I can’t be the only adult who’s gone through all of them and still doesn’t have a clear answer to this day. What I’m pretty sure I DO know after pondering over these issues time and time again is that we don’t do it because it’s good or because it looks cool. We do it because we don’t have a choice. We do it because of the cold realization that we can’t keep sucking on life’s resources forever without contributing to them. Which sometimes can come in the form of your care-giver collapsing (or it could be losing their job, or getting overall more tired as time goes on, or, y’know... Worse. Whichever worked for ya.)

We don’t shove the raw, sincere personality we’ve had as a child deep within ourselves and get to work and let what we called “home” just become a hotel-like place you go to sleep in and leave in the morning because it’s a good thing. We do it because it’s the only thing we can do.

It’s embedded within nature. Life and nature put us together and then take us apart so we can maybe get together with other people again and procreate and keep the cycle going. And even if we don’t procreate, even if we’re lonely all our life, we still gotta go and march in the same direction as everyone does. So are we making our own choices in this? Honestly, Oso, I’m not sure we are. But it always ends up coming down to this anyway, isn’t it.

And you can try to temperate it all you want, by for example staying at your parents’ and wearing the clothes you always wore. You’ll still lose something. Because life is about losing good things and doing your best to build new ones which aren’t the same until you lose these again. When you start working all day (which must be WAY more of a strain in Japan, too), you earn your family’s respect, but as you see them less and catch up with them less, they become kind of strangers, too. Strangers you once knew.

Oh, yeah. ‘Cause for the record. That Sokudo scene everyone’s been praising? It broke my heart. Because it hit SO FUCKING CLOSE TO HOME. My little brothers too, when we would meet again after not seeing each other for a long while, have been doing things completely out of their characters but that looked like a proper “classic sibling teasing” thing to do, so it could feel like we were never apart at all. It’s really kind, their heart’s in the right place and I’ll always be grateful for it, but... It’s still forced. In trying so hard to show that things never really changed, it just ends up emphasizing that things will never be the same.

I mean it’s painfully obvious how not-the-same things are. Osomatsu, who's always depended on his brothers to live and be himself, is alone and left to smirk to himself for lack of better company. Choromatsu’s doing the teasing to force some smiles out of others. Karamatsu will still be his painful self (which is actually such a fucking relief, bless that man), but Ichimatsu will suck his hateful reactions in for the sake of social interaction. Jyushimatsu doesn’t smile anymore; he’s not hyper anymore; he just doesn’t have the energy anymore.

This world is an unforgiving world to children especially.

And that’s what life does to you. You’ll feel proud because you’re going through it, but it doesn’t stop being painful, and it doesn’t stop cunningly, slowly but surely, ending the daily happy things and covering’em with a confusing blank slate.

This right here is the one thing that broke my heart more than the Sokudo moment. I gasped and hid behind my blanket when I heard it. Once again the show got fucking real on us, and that harsh reality may well be the biggest foe Osomatsu will ever have to face because it keeps coming back.

But he’s been questioning it... And honestly I’m curious to see where his reasoning got him. XD Those guys are asses for giving us a cliffhanger, but all’s fair in war, ain’t it. I’m waiting, big bro. Whatever you got... Bring it on.}
