Max wished, there and then, that a button to turn off her blushing was available. She desperately clinged to the idea of it, of a way to conceal how her body reacted to something that seemed plucked out of a dream.
“What’s it to you? Are you my protector or something…? Maybe you’re jealous because you want me for yourself! Come on, Chloe Price… You’re way too smart to fall for me, and far too flirty with guys to be gay!”
But a girl could dream, right?
This was the first time Chloe watched the blush blossom over Max’s face and felt dread. Because not only did it seem like her paranoia was right about what had happened--it seemed like Max liked being hit on by this Logan guy.
And, if that wasn’t enough--
“What’s it to you? Are you my protector or something…? Maybe you’re jealous because you want me for yourself! Come on, Chloe Price… You’re way too smart to fall for me, and far too flirty with guys to be gay!”
A lot. Yes. Big yes. Hella no. Wrong-o.
Chloe exhaled through her nose in a frustrated huff, unsure where to even start. She covered up the panic brought on by Max’s joking-yet-correct accusation with the also-real irritation brought on by the meathead jock at the center of this conversation. “Maybe I will be your protector now--didn’t you say the guy’s a bully? You can do way better than that.” She avoided the rest of what Max had said, unwilling to air her obviously unrequited feelings right now.
A second passed before she asked with both feigned and genuine curiosity, “So...you’re into football players?” She said it like a bad word, but fought a vision about becoming one herself. Yeah. Because you’re in shape, Chloe. Besides, if that’s true and she likes guys like fucking Logan, then her type might just be big, beefy men...and the closest you have to that is ‘tall for a girl’. Fucking shit.
