Three Simple Steps To A Saner Home
The French word for healthy is "sain." We've always loved the imagery of a sain home, a place to restore, away from the chaos of daily life, a comforting place that's safe, healthy, free of harm. Creating a sain or healthy home doesn't need to bust one's budget. Sure it could mean large jobs like replacing vinyl flooring or wall to wall synthetic carpeting with wood floors, or renovating the whole house to improve air flow. But, one can start really simply and sanely, frankly, with a few quick and easy changes. PIPs pooled the expertise of Jillian Pritchard Cooke, Founder of Wellness Within Your Walls, Navneet Magon Anand founder of Design Veritas and Robin Wilson, CEO of Robin Wilson Home and put together three simple steps to a healthier home that you can implement in a weekend and come with a pocketful of PIPs when you start your shopping on pipsrewards.com:
1. Add Some Plants To Your Interior: Not only will this liven up any room, but plants help create a healthier and fresher flow of air indoors, acting as a natural air filtration system, helping to produce oxygen from CO2, and absorb chemicals such as benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene. English Ivy tops the list of the best house plants that help filter indoor air, followed by Spider Plant and Peace Lilys. You can check out the full list here.
2. Survey The Cleaning Products Under Your Sink: Many cleaning products contain harsh, often toxic ingredients. Wean yourself off of these and on to safer, gentler products, such as these PIPs worthy brands you can buy through our partner, Vine Market: Method, Seventh Generation and Mrs. Meyers. Just remember you must click through these links for us to be able to verify you shopped on VineMarket and award you PIPs.
3. Switch To Non-Teflon Coated Pans: Non-stick metal pans are often coated with a synthetic polymer called Teflon. Toxic fumes from the Teflon chemical can potentially be released at high temperatures. An easy and healthy switch to a non-stick alternative pot or pan is to go with stainless steel or cast iron. A pro-tip to seasoning your new solid cast-iron pan is to warm it briefly on the stove and then coat it in lard or shortening. Bake in the oven at 300 degrees for 15 minutes. Pour off the excess oil and continue baking the pan for another 2 hours to ensure a wonderful and all-natural layer of non-stick protection on your pan. One of our favorite product lines of cast iron pans is made by Lodge. Make a PIP-Stop on your way to greening your kitchen and earn 2 PIPs for every dollar spent on the Lodge Cast Iron Cookware line through PIPs Rewards.
