Letting out a heavy sigh and running his fingers through his hair, Cave shook his head, lips turned down in a rare frown. “You of all people know that I can’t.” Frustration rang clear in his voice, but his expression softened just a tad when he turned to look at her.
“Caroline, we’re so close. This is all we’ve got right now, and if we make a breakthrough with this then things can only improve!”
It’s not to say that her faith in man or company has faltered, exactly‒‒‒‒ well, they are in dire straits if she’s ever seen them, this slippery slope getting ever more steep with each passing day since those fateful hearings ( nothing has been the same since then, and it’s frustrating when she's invested so, so much into Aperture Laboratories ). The optimism, the mad, unfaltering trust in his own ideas has always been something she’s admired about her boss, but their stocks have sunk and they’re pulling staff for test subjects.
Maybe she just needed to hold fast and believe that this really can turn things around.
She didn’t think so.
