harvesting goldenrod ! slowly getting acquainted with the landscape in norway 🌟🪹🌟
lost half of my nettle fibers to a mold accident :'^) at least i still have some left and am about to harvest more, but its quite sad bc i had a big quantity already ! guess its how i learn to be more careful in storaging them !
nettle saltwater retting !
trying henna dyeing on cotton bc i saw several sources saying it gives light greens, but so far it seems like i got a brown-green in the first hour after extraction & just brown in the second hour 😪
still, love how many green-yielding dyes only hold up during the first steeping or during the first hour of extraction !!
thinking about how best to size my dyed fabrics for painting (ideally for egg tempera 🌟)
i dont care much for the look of canvas stretched on canvas-bars and my fabrics are too thin to withstand that kind of pressure anyway
the ideal situation would be to turn the fabrics into bookcloth bc then i can paste it on a variety of surfaces (as long as it stays flat because of the paint), but i'd have to size the fabric on both sides for it to work as a painting surface
and idk that should theoretically work?? if it does the question becomes which glue/sizing to use....at uni we were taught to use cornstarch as a vegan alternative to rabbit skin glue, but i never ran tests to see if its too hygroscopic to be preserved in the long term ! there's also paper sizings like agaragar that i have no experience with (but might be worth a shot?)
ok so im realizing that nettle dye darkens with any stove heat post-steeping.... wondering if i could pull off cold dyeing it or solar dyeing so its less intense heat?? i need those minty greens that the steeping sample scraps hint at !!
loosely recontextualizing my chronic illnesses through painting local roman artefacts and votives :'^) one day the paint will all be eroded but the wishes for a better body remain both for me and for the bracari that built the votives (v. s. l. m.)
my first hand-dyed garment ☀️ this was an old white zara skirt that was forgotten in my mum's closet ! pulled the hem up a bit, changed the closure from a zipper to buttons & dyed it bright beautiful yellow with pomegranate rinds :^)
the leftover fabric was turned into ribbons for medieval hair taping (very nice to have matching ribbons!) and some scraps used for overdyeing with other plants at a later time
photos are from the sweet @magpieinavest after a wonderful day in their gran's garden 💛
