Monday MU-se: Helena Rubinstein

Today's MU-se is Polish born American magnate who became a millionaire in only a decade creating and selling her own make-up products. She started her own company under her own name Helena Rubinstein and became one of the richest women in the world.

Born in 1872 in a Jewish ghetto in Poland, she was the eldest of eight siblings born to a kerosene dealer. She moved to to Australia in her late teens and started making her own vats of beauty creams to sell in Melbourne.

In a decade from making creams at home, she had built a multi-million empire that spanned from London, Paris and New York. She expanded the company till it comprised sixty-two creams; seventy-eight powders; forty-six perfumes, colognes, and eau de toilette; sixty-nine lotions; and a hundred and fifteen lipsticks, plus soaps, rouges, and eyeshadows. Helena Rubinstein mascaras are considered the best in the world.

She was a brilliant businesswoman who sold her entire company to Lehmann Brothers for an amount that equals 84 million dollars in today's time. Then she bought it back for a pittance during the Great Depression. She was an art lover and collector and known for her jewlery collection.

Rubinstein's work ethic and aesthetics were what made her a real wonder woman and our Monday MU-se!
