A/N: So I suck and forgot to save the ask that someone sent requesting this. Sorry for that, and sorry this took so long to get to! I wanted to write some headcanons about dating Mako before getting to “i love you.” I tried to keep things gender neutral. As always, feedback of any kind isn’t required but it is appreciated!

Mako’s definitely matured since book 1 LOK and he’s more in tune with his feelings.

However, he’s going to make sure his feelings aren’t just fleeting. He’s not going to blurt it out the first time he realizes he loves you.

But I don’t think he’s going to ignore the feelings either. He just wants to be smart about it. He’s made mistakes in the past, and he wants to go right by you because he loves you obviously!

When the time comes, though, he’s going to tell you exactly how he feels. He doesn’t necessarily gush, nor does he fumble over his words.

You know from the look on his face that he’s speaking from his heart. Anyone else’s heart melt whenever Mako lets his guard down around those he loves? His facial expressions are adorable.

So how does this go down?

You two are enjoying a lazy weekend morning lying in bed, being cute and dorky.

He tells a stupid, corny joke that has you laughing just because you love him so much (though you haven’t said it yet).

You’re laughing loudly, eyes closed as they start tearing. He’s laughing quietly along with you, staring at you with all the love in his eyes.

He’s been thinking about how much he loves you for a few weeks now, but this moment sealed it for him. Your laugh was like music to his ears, and he felt so comfortable being his full self around you.

As your laughter dies down, and you try to catch your breath, your eyes lock with his, a soft expression on his face.

He lays a hand on your cheek, planting a sweet kiss on your lips.

“I love you, Y/n” he says, his eyes shining brightly. The words made you feel so complete, so whole.
