Orphan Heart Chapter 01.1: Birth of the King of Fire
Episode One: The King’s Entrance
(Tuesday September 20th 2005)Mal sits at his grandfather’s sickbed, his face filled with sorrow as Keiji Kingsley the man who has raised him all his life lays suffering from an unknown ailment. A weakened Keiji whispers to Mal his last wishes, alluding to various mistakes he made in raising Mal and asking the young man to forgive him before seemingly passing away. Several people come rushing to Keiji’s bedside pushing Mal out of the way in an attempt to revive him. The shock of his grandfather’s death leaving him in a state of catatonia, tears stream down Mal’s eyes as the large X shaped scar on his forehead explodes in pain.
(Thursday September 22nd 2005)Mal stands in mourning as his grandfather’s body is put to rest in his families tomb next to his deceased grandmother and his dead father. Unable to cry, Mal merely acknowledges the condolences of the various mourners as they share their grief with him. Approached by a large dark skinned women with wild blonde hair she wraps her arms around him in comfort with Mal sobbing dryly into her chest. Revealed to be his aunt Rebecca Kingsley she informs him that his grandfather asked her to take Mal in after his passing revealing to him that he’s coming to New Xanadu to live with her and his cousin Shane.
(Monday September 26th 2005)Sitting on a crowded Tram, Mal reflects on the events of the last several weeks and how they have led to his current situation. Deep in thought, Mal doesn’t notice the tram reach its destination the Lords Academy majestically hovering over the man made island of New Xanadu. As other students disembark, Mal is pulled along by his cousin Shane Kingsley dark of skin like her mother with hair just as wild. Urging Mal to pay attention to his surroundings, Shane comments on the founding and purpose of the Lords Academy as they pass through its massive campus. As she continues her explanation she grabs Mal aggressively warning him not to wander off while she’s talking noting his horrible sense of direction. Falling back behind her Mal displays his lack of enthusiasm about everything stating that he misses things when they were simpler and wishes he didn’t have to attend in his own words “giant land trap of a school”. Shane responds by quickly trying to cheer up Mal stating that at least he didn’t have to come alone which he takes some solace in cracking a weak smile. Taking him by the hand, Shane pulls him further into the campus promising to drill in the landscape so he won’t get “hopefully” lost while he’s at school.
As she shows him the highlights and landmarks he quickly finds the place a hotspot of danger and destruction witnessing a battle between the leader of the group Heat, Heat Burnside and the entirety of a group called the Brotherhood.
[Heat stands stoically as the Brotherhood surrounds him each member brandishing arms of various dangerous implements. Dismissing aid from the members of Heat surrounding him they reluctantly back down as the Brotherhood mob heat attacking in quick succession]
As he and Shane join the gathering of students watching, she points out to a frightened Mal that fights of this nature are common place due to the school wide competition known as the War of Kings. [Absorbing blows left and right and seemingly taking no injury, the Brotherhood relents their endurance drained from the attack. Questioning whether the Brotherhood is done, Heat cracks his knuckles before an orange flame surrounds his hand transforming into a ball of solid energy which he drives directly into the earth with a thunderous punch. The explosion generated from his punch sends the surrounding members of the Brotherhood flying and begins to destabilize the surrounding buildings in its massive wake]
Before Shane can explain in detail the nature of the War of Kings, Heat’s attack reverberates through the surrounding architecture resulting in the watching students being caught in the attack. As many scatter instinctively Mal reacts slowly and is pulled into the battle at hand as the floor underneath him collapses dropping him into the aftermath of the battle.
[As the dust clears from Heat’s attack the members of the Brotherhood stand broken and defeated as members of Heat cheer on their victorious leader. Cracking his neck and rubbing his jaw, Heat spits out a loosened tooth evidently dislodged in the volley with the Brotherhood]
As more members of the Brotherhood enter to join the fight, Heat readies himself for a second skirmish. The impending clash is suddenly interrupted by the appearance of a mysterious group who cause the surrounding students to cower in fear. Identified as the Disciplinary Committee, their leader a young man named Wallace Cervantes approaches Heat without hesitation. Warning Heat that violence on the Council’s turf is prohibited he draws two baton like weapons and questions whether he’s ready to pay the consequence. Members of Heat jump into the fight, including another baton wielding young man, though Heat stops them choosing to withdraw and leaving the broken Brotherhood to pick up the pieces of their loss. As he leaves he notices Mal and gives him a look before disappearing back into the crowd of students. Quickly withdrawing himself and joining Shane, she clarifies what just happened and explains to him the basics of the War of Kings, elaborating that is a system instilled in order to maintain order and peace on the campus, and its that’s been going on for longer then she can remember
As they walk to class they are caught by a wild and scarred figure who instantly recognizing Mal, greets him warmly. Unable to recognize the figure Shane introduces him as Mal’s childhood friend Remington Springfield, disappointing Remy who sighs when he realizes that Mal doesn’t remember him. Apologizing, Remy takes it in stride stating that its time they built up a new friendship introducing himself properly to Mal.
As Mal is introduced to the rest of the class by his teacher Renford Grant several students perk up upon hearing his last name. Mal understanding the presence of his last name attempts to dodge the spot light but Renford begrudgingly per school guidelines opens up the floor for questions. Immediately hands go up and a dangerous looking girl in the back named Harley Kaiser inquires about his unique X scars. Mal reveals that he doesn’t remember how he got them and most of his childhood up to a certain point is fuzzy to him. Another student named Bartholomew Kirk who Mal recognizes from the fight earlier questions him about his last name asking him if he really is the grandson of Keiji Kingsley. The crowd of students murmur with several having no knowledge of Keiji Kingsley though Bart explains he was one of the greatest professional martial artists in the world and master of the ancient martial art Flare Boxing. The hushed murmur grows louder as several students inquire whether Mal has inherited his grandfather’s ancient art. Cringing at this sentiment, Mal conveys to his classmates that he has no talent for martial arts and isn’t the successor. Before the class can bombard him with more questions he is asked to take a seat and despite Remy offering the empty chair next to him he is assigned next to a mysterious cold faced girl introduced to him by the teacher as Elizabeth Quinn. As he moves to sit down, he is pushed by Bart and accidentally bumps Quinn. As he picks himself off the ground Quinn stares at his scars and looks him in the eyes causing him to have a severe mental spasm. Crying out in pain, Shane and Remy rush to his aid as the spasm brings about vague and vivid memories of his childhood and specifically her as he passes out.
A scruffy man sits outside the quiet Kingsley mansion a drink in his hand and mourning directly infront of the graves of the Kingsley Family. Speaking words of quiet mourning, he states that he would have been at the funeral but didn’t want to cause any trouble with his appearance alluding to problems with one of the mourners present. Bowing in respect and pouring liquor on the floor in their memory he thanks Keiji for everything he did in his life compassionately calling him father. Chugging the rest of his drink, his mourning is interrupted by a woman in black he identifies as one of the caretakers of the mansion Abigail Schneider. Commenting on his haggard appearance, Edward Kingsley as the man is identified snarks that his father just died and he’s allowed a little slack on his appearance. Asking Abigail how his father passed, she stated peacefully and inquiring whether he asked for him at any point she shakers her head with Edward chuckling and stating that no matter what he did he could never live up to his older brother swinging his bottle in the direction of another grave marked Richard Kingsley. Finishing off his drink and standing, Abigail questions whether Edward is aware of his father’s last wishes, and coldly he states that regardless of whether Mal awakens or not it’s up to him to decide his fate stating that he owes his brother that much.
Wallace and a veiled young girl stand together in a large circular office commenting on the state of the War of Kings to a shadowed figure. The figure remaining unknown asks about any contenders for the final chair and Wallace reveals that both Lineage, Wild and the Amazons are showing a strong running controlling much of the lost territory between though Heat has quickly gained momentum controlling more then 30% of the lost territory and claiming even more by defeating the Brotherhood. The figure sighs at this hoping the Brotherhood would be allies in the future but questioning their weakness chooses to leave well enough alone. Wallace comments that Heat is definitely a threat, however the figure scoffs stating that a recent transfer has just eclipsed Heat and they should focus their efforts on dealing with him throwing Wallace a dossier with Mal’s photo on it and warns him to keep an eye on him
Unconscious Mal finds his mind bombarded with visions which he can barely make out. Drawing fragments of memory from the images he suddenly awakens when the visions freeze upon a mysterious blonde girl in a white dress. Waking up in the infirmary, he is quickly stopped from leaving by the school’s nurse Leona Lords who introduces herself and performs a full physical on him to his own reluctance. After several uncomfortable tests she mentions how ridiculously healthy Mal is and he jokingly comments that ever since he can remember his always been in the best of shape. Handing him his clothes, she points out that their a little too big for him and notes that it easier to keep a lower profile that way. As he prepares himself to leave, she readies a needle and he noticing the size shows a noticeable aversion questioning the necessity. Leona explains that it’s a simple flu shot and distracting him for a second injects him in his hand causing him to yelp in pain. Retracting the needle, she dismisses him and as he nurses the injection site she informs him that he’ll need to come back again for a follow up visit which Mal grimaces at.
Leaving the nurses office, he reencounters Remy who reveals that he took him to the nurses office after his little melt down and decided to wait for him afterwards. As Mal stands confused on why he would do that, Remy points out that when they were kids Mal would always do the same thing for him. Mal thinks back to the strange visions and recalls an incident with a young boy who he recognizes as a young Remy. Informing Remy that he remembers him now, or at least fragments of their past friendship, the two walk to their next class with Remy intent on rebuilding their old relationship and with Mal dwelling on the mysterious girl from his dreams.
Leona looks over the physical and a tear rolls down her cheek as she looks at a small locket whose picture is obscured by the light.
Hanging out with Remy and Shane till late in the afternoon, their conversations entailed attempting to piece together parts of his childhood, though Mal's lack of memories causes difficulty and he is off put by their own stories of his youthful days. Remy questions Mal about his doctor visit and he mentions that he had to get a physical and both Remy and Shane grimace with Shane pointing out did Mal get the shot. Showing them the injection site his right hand, Remy notes that he got the shot to his nose with an angry Shane revealing she got it to her eye causing both to wince. Mal points out the unnecessary nature of the shot, though both Remy and Shane point out that since getting it neither has gotten sick heck afterwards they’ve never felt better. Still suspicious about the nature of the shot, Mal suddenly realizes the time and alerting Shane the two depart saying their goodbyes to Remy and head home, hoping not to be scolded by Rebecca Shane’s mother and Mal’s aunt.
As they walk Mal notes that he is unable to fathom the change between his younger self and now, beginning to ponder what had happened to his memories and why his grandfather never told him anything. Before Shane can answer his queries she is alarmed by their location realizing that during their conversation Mal has led them astray. Lamenting Mal’s total lack of direction she blames herself for not taking the lead and as the two attempt to find their apartment they walk into a confrontation between Eliza Quinn and a small group of obvious delinquents. Eager to run away, Shane eager to document the encounter forces him to stay pulling Mal into nearby bushes and revealing that Eliza is a member of a an aspiring house too. The delinquents hit on Eliza with two of them touching her inappropriately, the sight of which causes Mal to tense up as a mysterious voice echoes out in the back of his head urging him to do something. Shane next to him notices Mal’s reaction and is alarmed by the sudden temperature change as Mal wrestles with the voice in his head. Pointing out that he can’t do anything, the voice asks Mal if he desires power and as reaches out to it images of the little girl in white flash into his head and the voice of his father with somber words spur Mal to act. To Shane’s shock, Mal lunges out of the bushes, alerting the delinquents to his presence causing them to ignore Eliza temporarily to deal with his appearance. Confused by his actions, Mal finds himself glued to the floor unable to move and as they approach him he falls to the ground peeing himself in the process. As the thugs mock him, Eliza casually brushes pass them to approach Mal staring into his eyes once more and frightening him with her cold demeanor.
[Clearly still interested in Eliza, one of the thugs reaches out to her only to be swiftly knocked aside with Eliza never let her gaze break from Mal’s. As the thug rises in fury he invites his fellows to join him in teaching Eliza to mind her place. Sighing in annoyance she rises to face the three delinquents who attack her in an undisciplined and clumsy rush. Commenting on the sloppy and formless nature of their techniques while dodging their blows effortlessly, her mono-tone mockery angers the leader of the group who draws a blade from his pocket to attack her. Responding to his escalation she raises her leg and with a lightning fast movement knocks the weapon from his hand and to the surprise of his fellows deeply slashes his hand. As he cringes in pain, Eliza comments that he and his friends are beneath her and dashing in between his two shocked friends she delivers a thunderous round house kick sending both flying to opposite sides of the alley. With his pained anguish turning into disbelief, the delinquent leader questions what Eliza is only to be delivered a thunderous knee to the face as an answer]
As Shane rushes out to Mal’s side, Eliza returns her gaze to Mal once more triggering another mental spasm passing out as he sees an image of the girl in white crying.
Waking up in his bed, he finds Eliza hovering over him inches from his face and freaks out. Confused, Shane appears and reveals that Eliza helped take him home after he passed out stating that he was too heavy for her to lift all by herself. As she joins Eliza at his side she reveals that the two of them were childhood friends to Mal’s bewilderment and confusion. The image of the girl from his dream flashes into his mind and he realizes she was a young Eliza jumping due to the revelation. Surprising both Shane and Eliza he quickly downplays his thought process replying to their concerned faces that he vaguely remembers her causing Eliza to blush and fumble her words to both his and Shane’s surprise. Bowing to Mal she asks him to join her family the Orphans as its new king.
