One day I'll move on from the "why are you laughing? I missed you" from thamepo but today is not that day. I think of it all the time. It is on constant play in my mind. I have watched that specific part of the scene countless times. It's everything to me

So I started Payback the Series.

Turns out stories with big entertainment corporations doing shitty things as ordinary people try to tread water and find happiness within the situation IS what my mind is deciding to focus on lately lol

First Thamepo

Now this. None of the very sexy gifsets implied it was gonna be THIS setup. I'm having a good time.

At first impression its like Thamepo and the Yakuza games smashed together, while also having a nonstop INTENSE tone. Tonally this drama reminds me of a ton of heavier jdramas I've watched, or dark kdramas like Beyond Evil or Flower of Evil with how FUCKED Sun's life is. It's just like, Sun's life is a serious crime drama and then he's SO intense. The premise is Great, and in theory is funny in how ridiculous it is. But Sun's actor plays serious drama so well that the tone manages to stay Heavy in general. (I'm grateful the premise is ridiculous: the over the top Jay guy who has tons of power, the ex Sunny who's a Complete Asshole celebrity, Sun's old boss who's as movie-depiction-scary of a mob boss as could be, all help balance out Sun's frankly depressingly grim backstory. In terms of managing to lighten the show back up to Bearable and sellable as "this might have romance.")

Idk im not wording myself properly. Basically... this show has a solid Feel to it, and it's very unique to me so far as a bl. Sun is by far the most serious take i've seen on "guy who was a debt collector thug" (closest similar was maybe Unknown and We Will Be Free, but Sun is by far more realistic in that they show him really hurting people, they don't really soften the premise so much as lean on it Hard like its going to be a full on heavy Gangster Angst Crime Drama). And then, like Thamepo, it so far is actually treating the flawed entertainment industry realistically. And framing the small happiness with people you let yourself connect to as reasons worth living - like Sun seeing something of what he once loved, in Sky and Khemjehn now, and its clear he's going to grow to love them like a family. Despite Sun having been empty, and then deciding to dedicate himself to revenge.

And I love Khemjehn. He's a great agent, friend, dad, and I find him handsome because well his look is very my type lol with the beard and smile and how kind he is. I love him. (This show gives a lot of hot young guys because its a bl of course, but also? A lot of handsome older men in my opinion. Lots of people who draw attention). Anyway. There was a taiwan drama where one guy falls for a dad who looked like Khemjehn and seeing this makes me want to go watch that again.

This show reminds me a lot of some jdramas I've enjoyed, vibes wise. Like Pornographer, and My Beautiful Man (but darker), and Our Dining Table (in how it handles comedy and the small kind touching moments between characters as they love more - like Sun toward Sky and Khemjehn, and with his little brother).

Anyway. I really like it so far. I also have NO idea what to expect from it.

While I know it's a bl, it does feel like its got a main storyline which is Not the romance - its Sun's revenge, and/or what the journey of seeking revenge does to Sun as a person. It feels pretty firm that THAT is the main plot, and any romance or sex or flirting feels like it simply is happening alongside or as a part of. (Which also reminds me of Thamepo, because in Thamepo reuniting MARS and Po finding his internal worth is the main plot, Thame and Po falling in love is just a Part of that).

I finished Thamepo.

Stuck the landing. No notes. Happiest possible ending for me, and I love the takeaway that its okay to value more than success, and your worth is not tied to your success. You are lovable when succeeding and failing, the people who care for you just enjoy being in life with you, and creating and building with you - which Thamepo and MARS whole story concludes on.

I appreciate that take deeply. For me, it makes this the kind of show i could rewatch as a comfort show, when life feels brutal or im treating myself with unfair expectations. Its also the kind of love i would one day like to find. <3

I know I keep rambling about Thamepo but just like.

I really buy that Thame's actor could be a leader for an idol group. And Po's actor expresses so much with his expressions, that even when he has few lines or actions a joy to see the performance. (And both those guys acting abilities makes it all the more amazing to me in retrospect how easily they appear in their roles in Me and Thee, and how quickly they were able to show a compelling relationship to watch in that show with the amount of scenes as they got).
