A good question! It can be pretty hard to tell, my impression of their sleep is that it's typically governed by the stillness. A sleeping snake will sit totally unmoving, unwatching. An awake snake may track you with their eyes, or shift a little if you move around. Kepler is a fidgety boy so his sleep/wale habits are more obvious to me than the others.
