The reign of Amlaith was mostly peaceful, despite border disputes with his brothers’ kingdoms of Cardolan and Rhudaur. Under his rule, the dwindling population forced him to move the capital from Annúminas to Fornost. It was in Fornost that Amlaith met his wife Linnoril, a bard, and his son Beleg was born. Beleg was a mighty warrior who spent his youth defending the Weather Hills from his cousins of the rival kingdoms. He married one of his scouts, Ferieth, and though their love was great she refused to become his queen upon his inheritance, instead preferring to spend her life among the ranger-folk by the borders. However, their son Mallor was not so keen on a life of battle, and followed Beleg to Fornost after Amlaith’s death. Mallor ruled during troubled times, finding solace only in his husband Cidinnor, who bore him a son, Celepharn. It was during Mallor’s reign that a shadow fell upon the Greenwood in the east, resulting in the formation of the White Council, to which he was not invited, resulting in a grudge against the elves that he passed on to Celepharn. He did permit the newly-arrived periannath to settle in his lands, mostly at the request of Cidinnor, who was fascinated by these new creatures. Celepharn dismissed the advice of Elrond to reconcile with Cardolan and Rhudaur, but allowed more periannath to settle in Arthedain. He was a jealous man, envious both of the long-lived elves and of the glory of Gondor to the south. His rule coincided with that of Atanatar II Alcarin in Gondor, and he closed off all trade between their kingdoms at his wife’s urgings. Queen Glasdil was, despite her name, a deeply bitter woman who scorned Gondor’s power as corrupting, and while she may have been correct in the long run, she failed to make a proper judgement on her own kingdom. The son of Celepharn and Glasdil was Celebrindor, a much more mild-mannered man than his parents. He restored good relations with the crumbling kingdoms of Cardolan and Rhudaur and reopened trade with Gondor, but though he was a well-liked king, his legacy of cooperation would not endure. His wife, Sídhiel, was a peacemaker much like him, but their son Malvegil would face a deadly challenge that required strength of arms to overcome. During Malvegil’s rule, the Witch-king founded Angmar to the north of Arnor and began to draw evil men, orcs, and other fell creatures to his service. This amassing of evil forced the remaining periannath to move westward, but Malvegil would not heed their warnings of rising darkness and ignored the gathering storm. His spouse Hwinior, however, ensured that their son Argeleb learned to wield his father’s sword, though none of the royal family truly expected the threat of Angmar to become as serious as it did.
