The thing is, Madi knew the fire was bad. She’s known that most of her life. But there was a certain kind of relief in Madi when she arrived to the island, at least about this aspect of her life. There would be fires to get warm, to keep themselves alive, and some people could probably do some tricks with fire too, but mostly she was done with it. Done with fire, done chasing it, done having to fear it in a regular basis.
After the initial peace time, Madi felt like all she saw was the destruction the fire could do, starting with the animal pen, right up to all the damage Calliope did or the way her shelter burned up the previous night.
She refused to believe it was her, it must have been something else, somebody else, no matter what the other guy said. But it did press her even harder to fire-proof the farm. All that work Tomas and so many other people put into the place, Madi would have hated to see it all go up in flames and get ruined because some people couldn’t learn to control their element fast enough. Ruin decades of work and cause a kind of ruin that could have unimaginable consequences on them.
So she turned half the island upside down for something, anything to use as a hose in the structure she dreamed up for the farm. If she could get one single thing, she would be set. The other part of it would pose a different challenge, in forms that she didn’t know how to build things, but she would figure it out. And at least while she worked on it, she could not think about the fires and how some people thought her attunement was that. She really needed any of the other three elements to show themselves soon to make it all go away.
After checking the pile with the remaining stuff from the plane (really, it was mostly trash at this point, as far as Madi could tell), she figured she might as well check out the part of the plane that remained on land. Maybe she could get lucky. To her surprise, there was a woman near the plane. “Oh, hello there. I-- I hope I’m not interrupting anything,” she said, pulling at the hem of her sweater’s sleeve. “Are you looking for anything in particular? Or just passing by?”
