#Malta: Big thanks and appreciation to @timesofmalta, @lovinmalta, and the Mayor Albert Buttigieg for highlighting the plight of St Julians Cat Village and the imminent destruction of a 60+ year old tree, all in the name of ‘development’ _ 'St Julian’s residents are fighting to save the “last surviving tree” on Spinola Road from being chopped down to make space for an extension to a luxury business and residential development. Mayor Albert Buttigieg said the owners of Portomaso development are preparing to "unleash their chainsaws" on the eucalyptus tree.Apart from being the last tree in the road, it has become somewhat of a landmark for shading the famous Cat Village under its branches’. Roza Zammit, the woman who built the cat village over 40 years ago, says she always remembers the tree there. Now she fears it will chopped down this week to make space for commercial outlets’ @timesofmalta. . #DisappearingMalta: We used to have a beautiful, colorful, view from our 2nd floor apartment balconies. Used to... this will be final in the next few days when the destruction of this regal 60+ year old takes place, in the name of ‘development’ (because Malta needs more overpriced apartments). Over the four years that we have lived in St Julians, we have witnessed the systematic destruction, uprooting, of all things nature - from majestic palm trees to swathes of vibrant bougainvillea... all gone. And, just as importantly, the Cat Village, which is a landmark and huge tourist attraction, under the sanctuary of the tree will be no more, in that spot (it will be relocated further along... small mercies, and all that). Or, In the not-as-subtle words of my husband, @jasonflorio: Murder of the last tree on Triq Spinola and death of the Cat Village as we know it _ Dear Malta let's make a stand! We have had news that the rapacious bastards that own Portomaso will unleash their chainsaws and destroy the 60+ year old tree at The Cat Village tomorrow - Monday August 10th. It’s the last tree on Triq Spinola, St Julians - and the death knoll of the Cat Village after 40 years as we know it.
