Mam Tor (mother hill) - Max and I have made a point to come to the Peak District once a year, every year, since 2018. We always make time to climb Mam Tor, no matter what we’re doing. Today was no exception. We woke up at 3am to make sure we were on the summit for sunrise. It was pissing it down with rain, so just saw the sky turn from black to murky grey, and the visibility was awful 😂 great way to start my birthday though!
Tried to go to Peveril Castle today in Castleton (Peak District tourist hotspot, but a decent drive from us)
Twas closed. Due to high winds. High winds?? It was barely ruffling the leaves on the trees.
Wouldn’t close a castle in Wales for that.
And because I’m petty, I looked up today’s wind speed in Castleton: didn’t get above a fresh breeze on the Beaufort Scale.
Never mind!
We went to look at the broken road at Mam Tor instead
Used to be the main road between Sheffield and Manchester apparently. Not any more. When you’re married to a geologist these are the places you go and get a full run down of the geological whys and wherefores. Tres exciting.
